I've decided that I'm going to get a bichon frise this summer and she will be the first female I've ever owned. My question is how much does it usually cost to spay & at what age should it be done? Thanks.
When we got our 85 lb akita spayed, it cost $210. That was with preanesthetic testing. I'd plan on it costing $150 to $250 to be on the safe side. I highly recommend preanesthetic testing, they will do a test to check the functionality of your dogs major organs to try and ensure they'll handle anesthesia alright.
You will really need to call around. I am in South Texas and it costs about 75.00 for large dogs and 50.00 for small dogs. Definately around 6 months is best. I've not heard of it being less expensive than that, but I know depending on where you live it can be a LOT more.
In my experience, the costs is according to the weight of the animal. Call around and first of all, I would suggest calling your local humane society first, even if your puppy is a purebred and/or you didn't/or you dind't get it from the humane society. Often, they can direct you to a low cost clinic or vet.

harlee, you reminded me of something. Our local humane society does low cost spaying/neutering to the public. Can't hurt to ask. I don't know anything about cats, but my daughter's friend had hers spayed there for 15.00. I am assuming this is a really good price.
