Can you help me? I RUSHed Bella to the vet and now we have medication. 3 kinds of medication twice a day. And they are all pills. we have already tried the hide in cheese, bread, meat thing. Bella is incredibly smart and stubborn. Ah yorkies.
Try peanut butter, or you can make a meatball out of canned food. The metronidazole can be very bitter so you'll need to hide it well. And be sure to wash down with a little syringe full of water. If you don't have a syringe ask your vet they can give you one. Good luck!
I can feed pills flawlessly to a cat, Im' talented ;) Pry open her mouth, use your finger to pusht he pill back as far toward her throat as possible. CLose her mouth, hold it closed and tap on her throat.. the tapping causes a swallowing reflex.
Man, giving pills can be such a pain in the butt..Especially when the dog can pick out all of the cheese and then spit the pill out! I have found 2 things that work and have always done this anytime they need medication.
I either put the pill down to the very back of their tongue/throat and then shoot a syringe (sp?) full of water down their throat, keeping their mouths closed and tilting their head back (it forces them to swallow).
Putting the pill in the syringe and letting it disolve in the water, then shooting it into their mouths.
Thanks guys...all good advice. This dog is to talented. Once I gave her a can of salmon. When I came back, all the little bones were in the dish! Fish gone. I will definately try the syringe thing. I suspect peanut butter doesn't stand a chance!
minn i will pay for you to fly out here next time fox needs a pill. i used to make fun of clients who said they couldnt pill their cats. after trying to get anything down that cats throat i keep my mouth shut now.the WWF wrestlers have nothing on him.

rofl after the fights I've had to endure pilling some cats, I definitely think taht some have more of a talent for avoiding it than others. I have yet to give any dog a pill that fights even half as much as a cat does, cats HATE pills.
There are pill dispensers that you can put the pills in it, shove it in their mouth as far as it will go and "inject" the pills straight in to her throat. They canít spit it out no matter how much they try. That pill popper saved my fingers countless times. No pet owner should be with out one.
when sandy was sick i tried a couple of different ways: i put peanut butter on the pill, and then wrapped it in bread, and dumped the bread in gravey...she ate it. i also just opened her mouth shoved the pill in, closed her mouth and held it closed and then tapped or blowed slightly on her nose...doing that she would move her tongue to lick her nose and then she would swallow the pill!
If the dog is still finding the pill in the peanut butter, you could crush the pills between two spoons and mix with penut butter(careful sometimes they fly out the sides of the spoons), I feed it on the end of a spoon. I find if I move the spoon around while they are trying to eat the peanutbutter, they are to distracted to find anything.
I got lucky with Logan, he just eats them! He'll even perform a command to get his pills...hehehe
But with my cat, he has asthma and has to take a broncho-dialator pill every morning. Its a two man operation, one holds him down the other opens the mouth and pops the pill in the back of the throat, then the person holding him (usually my fiance, the cat is really fat) shuts the mouth and rubs the throat, until he swallows.
My fiance also has a cocker spaniel with Addisons who takes pred twice a day, so they just drop it in wet food. and he cant even tell the difference. there is another way, which I sometimes give my cat his pill. I crush it and mix it with the wet food. Works like a charm, but he doesnt eat wet food everyday.

i usually crush the pills to a powder and put them in a tiny amount of meat and let him just eat the little piece of meat. Or i just stick my finger gently into the corner of his mouth causing him to open his jaws and pop it in and hold his muzzle closed whilst gently stroking his throat to make him swallow..it works a treat for me. ~Twink
