My brother and his wife want to purchase a dog. They are saying they are not going to give the puppy any puppy shots they will not deworm it and they will not put it on heartgard or give it flea preventative. The only one they will give is rabbies since the state requires the dog to have it. They will also do no tests for the dog each year to be sure he is healthy or a regular yearly shot of distemper.
I got so upset at my brother. I was like it is people like you that should not have a dog. He said it is people like you that think their children should have shots also. (I know CRAZY!) We were just going at it! He said he is going to do it all natural with no shots from a vet. He said wild dogs do not need shots so why does mine? I said because you are around other people you have a child you can catch things from a dog. What if your child end up with worms or? I asked him what if your child eats the dogs poo or touches the pee and puts in her mouth then what? (she is only 2) He says that will not happen. Then his wife tell me a dogs mouth is cleaner than anything so they really do not need to worry. Then they said do you know what natural stuff to take obviously not so dont talk until you look at all aspects! I was just amazed! He also only want to get a dog for free or for less than 100.00.
I cant believe they will let a dog live with worms! They will not give heartworm or anything! I said I would even give them (shots and what ever needed) if he buys them so he can save money just so the dog can get his shots and deworming!
I also highly doubt if he would clean the teeth he was already getting upset about a dog making a mess in the house since he would have to potty train it!
I am so upset he and his wife were upset and left my home. Ok now I need your help. Does anyone have anything I can print for him to show why it is needed to have these shots? Also is he right? Is there a natural way to avoid giving shots? Also what can people get from puppy's and dogs if shots and dewormings and all the proper stuff is not given? Will he be in trouble with the state or someone if the proper shots were not given? (He did say he will give rabbies, but that is it only because it is the law) Was I wrong for getting so upset? I have not gotten so mad at someone. Why get a dog if you are not going to take the proper steps in having one?
Any help would be great. Sorry for the long post. I just never thought I would hear that from my brother. I have so many pets he knows I love animals why say that to me?

Did you tell him that the average lifespan of an adult wild canid is 4 to 6 years? And that up to 20% of puppies will not survive to age 1 from disease and parasites? That a lot of dog parasites ARE transmittable to humans and especially children, specifically roundworms and hookworms? Not to mention the risks of being tick bitten and getting Lyme disease?
No wonder you were mad, I'd have called him an idiot to his face.

Minniyar - thanks I did not think I was wrong! The problem is I do not know as much as others on the forum as far as what can happen to animals and people if the shots are not done. That is why I want all info as much as possible about what will happen if not given to the dog- to people and the dog. Once I have all the correct info I can come at him and he will have a harder time with telling me I am wrong! I love him and his family and I don't want his family sick, hurt or the puppy sick or hurt.
Don't feel bad. My sister is almost, but not quite, as bad. She has a German Shephard who runs away whenever he has a chance. I told her to get him neutered, as that would decrease his motivation to run. She said no, her husband would like to breed him some day. Ok, he's a purebred dog (they think), but they don't even have papers for him! They know NOTHING about his background! I also asked her if she gives him heartworm medication, because they live next to a large creek-lots of mosquitoes. No, she doesn't. Some people just shouldn't have dogs.
You have every right to feel the way you do. I have never heard of an all natural way to keep a dog healthy.
On the down side, as long as he is providing care and has the shots required by your local ordinance he is legal. Not smart mind you, but legal.
As min said there are many worms that can be transmitted to humans. I don't know about other things, but I understand your fury. Why?
I don't know where you are but I see this attitude a lot around here. People have the attitude that "when I was little my parents never took our dogs to the vet and they were fine" Well, now we know better. That to me is like saying 100 years ago people didn't go get medicine when they were sick all the time. Yes, and they died a lot earlier too.
I don't know how to help you, but I wanted to tell you IMO you are 100% right and vert away.
Is it possible that he said all those things just to upset you? If he did, it's a horrible thing thing to do, and it's even more horrible not give a puppy shots. Where is his mind? I lost a puppy to distemper that I adopted her from the Shelter because the Shelter waited until she was there 3 weeeks before giving her aby vaccines. I only had the poor little thing for ten days and she was only 4 months old. The poor baby never even had a chance.
Did he get shots for his child or has she never had any either and she being treated by "natural" means?
harlee - he does not give his daughter shots he is all natural no nothing! If she has a fever or when her teeth were coming in NOTHING! There has been times that his wife would run over to my house to get a asprin because they do not have any and if he found out that she was taking "drugs" he would be mad! Nope all natural so he wants his dog to be all natural also. Oh and no he did not say those things to upset me he really feels this way!
Gina - I don't get your question? As min said there are many worms that can be transmitted to humans. I don't know about other things, but I understand your fury. Why? Why for what that I am upset? Oh and what does IMO mean?
***Edited By: holidayzbliss on 6/4/2005 10:56:23 PM*** Reason: added
LOL, I mean why as in your question why would he do this? I have no idea.
IMO = in my opinion
Just saw your post about their child. I know a lot of people are going this way with their kids, and I have to say I totally disagree. There are always risks with shots, but the benefits far outweigh the risks. Plus, what happens when she (?) is ready to go to school and they have no immunization records?
Sorry about the confusion. I think I was getting as upset as you. Ok, maybe not as much because if my brother said that to me I would be far more upset than I am right now, but I just meant why as in a rhetorical question.
Oh, holidayzblissv, that is absolutely horrible. I can understand why you feel the way you do. I don't blame you one tiny bit. You have every right in the world to be upset I guess I was just to see another side and hoped that he didn't really mean what he said.
I don't think he has any business getting a dog, let alone having a child. I'm surprised no one turned him over to Child Protective Services because of the daughter. To be honest I feel sorry for his wife and child and now I'm going to feel badly for that poor little puppy that he will end up getting. This is really a sad situation. I wish I could tell something that would help. Sigh.
Well, first off, your brother and his wife are idiots. Sorry but it's true....anyway....
That's so ignorant. They need to do their research. I can't believe there are such stupid people in the world. Without shots and deworming stuff, you can warn him of that as well. Worms can kill a dog real fast if not treated. I would take the dog from him, if he were my brother. Nobody in my family would get past me if they did that, their dog would be gone in 2 seconds. That's just me.
You can google stuff about not deworming dogs, not getting heartworm preventative, etc. I feel real sorry for their future dog. Are they poor or something? If they want a free dog then how can they feed it? Pathetic people make me want to vomit. Ugh...I can go on and on...
Here's an example of how well, "natural" treatment worked....this lady that is a client of ours brought the dog in. I asked if he had been on heartworm prevention and she said, "no, I give him lots of garlic and that keeps the mosquitos away." The dog ended up getting heartworms....so, yes there are theorys out there, but I don't think there is anyway to keep this puppy healthy without some kind of medical care...not to mention his daughter. I wish there was a way to take him to a place where a puppy was dying of parvo or distemper just so he can see what happens when puppies are not vaccinated. Unfortunanly he'll probably be one of the lucky ones who's puppy doesn't get sick....ugg...this really irritates me. I'm sorry you've been put in this position. I don't know if you've tried googling these subjects to see if they have any info on the common diseases that puppies are suseptible to. Your vet might have some handouts, so you might call them. Anyway, hang in there. I hope somehow he'll get some sense knocked into him.
Heffanator-no they are far from poor trust me. They just thought if they get a dog that is not a puppy it should be free (like one that is 3 years old) Plus they said they can find a dog for 50 or 75. I told them they could, but probably a mix or if they say it is a beagle probably no papers. I don't think they care about papers though.
I have no idea how I would be able to get in their house and take a dog from them without ending up in jail for breaking in! (do they have computers in jail? I will write you guys! te-he)
I want to inform them of the problems that may arise without proper treatment. They are not going to get a dog for a year so I have time to show them the right way. Neither of them have ever owned a dog. I just think they do not know much about dogs and that is why they are thinking like idiots. I think once they know what lies ahead if a dog is not taken care of properly they will do the right thing . . . I hope.
Oh and my husband just said the same thing about shots and school. I wonder what they will do?
***Edited By: holidayzbliss on 6/4/2005 11:35:15 PM*** Reason: added
He'll have to breakdown and give her the shots because kids have to go to school and they have to have shots. Why can't she take aspirin? that's crazy. What about baby aspirin? I even use that and it's tasty...wow...I'm getting off track...ha..... I know what a baby sounds like that's cutting teeth and it's NOT fun! My goddaughter is and boy can she scream. She gets pain meds and she is fine and she's 4 months old. I would never risk getting my child sick from something that could kill her, when you get a simple vaccine every now and then! They cry but they get over it.
I hope you can talk some sense into them. What about his wife? Does she want her to get shots? If so, I would just sneak and do it anyway and tell him to get over it.
heffanator-no his wife agrees with him all natural. When the girls teeth were coming in she had a VERY bad fever and they just let her ride it out. In the end she is fine and they said see doing things natural and no drugs and she is fine. I guess they were lucky, but I have had friends that a fever has caused major problems with their children if not properly taken care of right away. Trust me they are real set in their ways they wont eat anything with sweetner in it (nutrasweet) they wont let her have anything not natural like candy and stuff except on her birthday which I guess that part is good not eating Mcdonalds and stuff. Either way I hope they do the right thing and take care of the puppy they will get. I cant really tell them what to do with their child it is like talking to a door.
my daughter has an auto immune disorder so this isn't an option for me, but the thoughts of my daughter coming into contact with a dog that could kill her scares me.
The dog deserves better and the ones coming into contact with the dog deserve better. As a mother of a chronically ill child, I hope that cooler and smarter minds prevail for the sake of the puppy as well as their child. If the child is unfortunate to have the same type of illness Ashley has then a virus that causes only mild symptoms in you and I and the dog could easily attack the blood stream and cause a total body shut down. My daughter almost died a year and a half ago from Fith's disease, slapped face syndrom or Human parvovirus.
I hope that all goes well and that puppy and child are safe.
I don't know how he will find a dog that has not already had the first set of shots and if he gets it from a breeder they usually require you sign something saying you will get the other 2 rounds of shots. I hope he doesn't get one at all though.
The way I see it, is that if he goes to a breeder, or even if he goes to the pound, he will ansewer the questions the way he THINKS the breeder or pound will want them anwered. Having a puppy I adopted from the pound, they also question you about how you plan on takingcare of the dog. As for the little girl, maybe the parents are planning on home schooling, in which case, she will get away without having to show proof of any immmunizations.
This is just a sad situation no matter how you look at it.
I'm truly surprised that they have all these "beliefs", but will bow to the authority of the state and local government and get a Rabies shot. You are nicer than me..bless you...I would have opened that can of vintage 1999 whooparse. Doubt that arguing could help in this case. Too bad. Family is family, can't live with them, can't shoot them. e
