Well i had to take Damien back to the vets and it itching did not go away. We have tried all kinds of flee treatments and know it was not flees. Well the vet seems to think he is allergies to the solid gold food so i had to put him on new food as well as get medicated spray for him. Poor little guy is losing his hair on his legs and butt from this. They also did another poop test and he had tape and round worm!!!
He's not allergic to his FOOD- but to an ingredient (or more) in it! Did your vet put him on a low ingredient diet? There are some great ones out by Wellness these days- can help you issolate his problems so that you can eliminate them from his diets. Just watch out for gimicky "prescription" diets- vets make a killing on them, and unless you know WHAT ingredients are bothering him- you don't know what to watch out for anyway.
what food did your vet recommend ? there are several good allergie diets that can be found in pet stores like the wellness fish and potato one. there is also a great food made by hill's called prescription diet Z/D. i dont normally care for any of the hills or science diet lines but this food has had some seriously awesome results with dogs who have food allergies. good luck. hope he feels better soon.
No it was a over the counter one, thats what he said to get. Any advice or ideas would be great i need to get this under control for my little guy. Good news was at just under 4 months old he was 44.3 lbs
Oh, vets and their darned lack of knowledge about food and allergies! Grrr.
Eukanuba is not only a flat-out ripoff- but is NOT NEAR the quality of Solid Gold. It has many more allergens, many more fillers- just isn't a better food.
For true allergies, you want to stick to a food with few ingredients for several weeks. You cut out ANYTHING else- no biscuits, no treats- nothing that you suspect could be an allergen.
Common dog food allergies include corn (in all it's glorious forms), soy, egg, wheat, and proteins. Look for a food with a single "alternate" protein. Fish and venison are usually good choices, lamb is often tolerated well, too. Duck is a good alternate to chicken. I like Wellness Simple Solutions- they have VERY short ingredient lists and contain none of the common allergens (as with most good foods). Their common Whitefish and potato formula is often a good allergy food, too.
Natural Balance makes some good allergy foods and are quite affordable. They have both a Duck and a Venison formula- worth a shot.
thank you for the info, its so hard trying to do what is right!!! I had my last dog on Solid Gold and he did great so that why i put Damien on it. Im going to check out that link you gave me and than im off to go get more food tomorrow.
Poor Damien. My last dog was allergic to grass and fleas and would break out on her belly. How is he doing otherwise? Oakely is getting so big and is getting goofier all the time. She loves water which is good since it has been so hot. She loves to be squirted with the garden hose.
Hi debi im glade to see your little one is doing great as well. Damien is doing great; i swear he gets bigger over night. I canít hardly lift him into my suburban any more he is 46Lbs as of this morning. His still dumb as a rock but i love it his little clown. He loves the water also, but his upset as i have kept him out of it for the moment as his skin has been bad. He has a pool that he will go to and jump in and he gets so angry as there is no water in it. We are going out this weekend to get him a life jacket so he can go out in the boat with us, he will jump right into the water so i want to make sure he is safe.
The venison formula is a Simple Solutions formula- not the more common varieties- so you'll likely need to make a call to the location to see if they carry it. But a store that carries Wellness is likely to have lots of selection anyway. :)
long dog...what a good couple of addresses you posed...i really enjoyed reading them and findind a store some 100 or more miles from me..lol..but if i stock up for th e month it will be fine..I really need to pick your bbrain on more dog topics...can you post more good links.i for one think they are good information all would like to read..thanks
So did you find the food? The Other one is Natures Balance, they also have a few diets incl Venison, and have also a type of sausage roll like the roll overs. The cool thing about it is you can cut it up and use it for training treats for sensitive dogs.
Yes excuse me I did mean Natural Balance, I don't know where (Natures Balance) came from?
