I have a 4 month old Brittany. What do you suggest to do for barking. If we are reading the paper or doing something else and he wants our attention, he barks. I've tried a toy, but that doesn't work, I've tried ignoring him. I 've tried to call him to come to us and put him in a calm position, and he runs and thinks we want to play.
I would try spray bottle with water, each time barking begins I spray water at him and tell him "no bark" I had to do this only a few times and the barking has ended. if he does bark and I walk to the spray bottle he quits.
Yep, or keep a leash on him in the house and say 'Quiet' sharply and firmly with a leash correction. If you give him a toy, he learns that barking gets him a toy. You awnt him to learn that barking gets him no more than a correction and never anything else. If your dog loves water, you can mix 1/4 vinegar in with 3/4 water and squirt him for barking> That's very effective too.
Actually wild canids don't bark to get attention. They nudge, whine, paw, etc. Excessive barking to get attention causes trouble with family memers and neighbors. If the dog learns that whenever he barks he gets attention, it becomes a habitual behavior, and you can't get them to shut up in any situation.

Barking to tell us something is ok, but barking to bark is not ok. I can tell the difference. I have tought my border collie instead of bark to Huff at me when she needs to go out or her water is down.
i can vouch that not correcting the barking leads to a behavior you might not like later on..My hubby is a softy..and his baby Minnie (schnauzer) started to talk like..and he incouraged it and really thought it was cute..well we cant get this dog to shut up now..she can talk for 15 minutes..and it is annoying..i told him it was a wrong idea to permote it but he ...is a he..and there for doesnt listen ...well.now he is sorry to make it get this bad..it was all cute when she was really small and young..but now she is like a moose and loud...she also has told the rest of the gang that it is ok to yap in the house..drives me crazy...so...what ever you do..correct the behavior and i hope that your lucky enough to have a united partnership with your hubby as far as what is expected and tollerated...good luck to you...
