Hi everyone. I'm adopting 8 hairless rats from a woman who can no longer care for them. i've never owned anything else other than a dog, and i'm pretty sure these things don't eat kibble and bark! can someone please give me a list of supplies that i need? thanks!
Check you local feed store. Purina makes a good rat chow. Also, check your local pet store or Wal-mart for feed. They eat a diet of seeds, fresh fruits and vegetables, in moderation. They will also eat dog biscuits, which are good for them to chew on, since their front teeth are constantly growing. Dry cereal, not sugar sweetened.
I've had hairless rats over the yrs but sadly only have one older female left named Thelma. I've found that they like the guinea pig drops w/vitamins in them.. especially the vanilla flavored ones. They also tend to prefer shredded newspaper bedding as long as you keep it clean & changed or they otherwise will get mites.. not fun to try and treat and get rid of. Being rats of course, they love to eat most anything in addition to w/e your going to feed them regularly. If they've been socialized then you should take them out and let them play (only 1 or 2 at a time) w/you supervising to make sure they dont get into anything they arent supposed to. They do tend to drink alot of water too so guinea pig/rabbit size water bottles I've found to be effective if you have several rats in a cage.
thats interesting. My rat lived to be , which is pretty darned old for a rat. You learn something new every day =P
I had my rats from like 1989 to 1994. I got all my information from books in the libraries, none of which mentioned the toxicity of cedar and pine shavings.. I wonder how extnesive the studies were 10 years ago?
