Can anyone advise me on how much it would cost me to have a pup shipped to England and if the quarantine from the U.S. is still six months, and also if there is a mimimum age that a puppy can travel by air. Thank you.
It was england that had the 6 month quarantine period for dogs, not the US. I think the US quarantine period was a month.. don't quote me on that tthough. Anyway, first off, you should never buy from anyone overseas who has never shipped before. Most of the responsibilities are in the hands of the shipper, the party in england, and not you. The shipper is required to provide a veterinary certificate that attests to the overall health of the animal. It has to be treated for worms/ticks/fleas 24 to 48 hours before it is shipped. The animal has to be microchipped or tatooed before it can be shipped. Dogs that are more than 3 months old have to be given the rabies vaccination, and all animals have to have blood drawn to test for rabies testing. It's kind of complicated, but as I said before, it's all in the hands of the shipper, not you, the reciever. If you go to this site, you will see what all is required for shipping from the UK. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/ncie/iregs/animals/uk.html Scroll down and read the part for feline and canine procedures, you will need acrobat to read most of them.
I should have mentioned, if the dog has all these health certificates done and is examined by a veterinarian upon arrival to check the animals' health, I think you can take the dog home within a few days if not the same day it lands, no quarantine period.
hmm..I read the post as she wanted to send the dog to England..and as far as I know there is still a 6 month quarrantine from the US (although I've heard that they started to let some dogs from the european continent in ..but so far I think it's only been the ones that came from England in the first place). So british folks can take their dogs on vacation now (without worrying about quarrantine) but I think it doesn't count for the rest of us.
You are totally right, Mrama. I misread what she posted. In any case, in 2002 the UK and EU lessened the restrictions on the 6 month quarantine period for dogs going to the UK from certain countries, including the US and Canada. Interestingly, it's very easy to find information on shipping a dog TO england, but harder to find info on importng a dog FROM england. Anyway, go here http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm Go down and click on 'USA and Canada' in the selection list on the right. If you ship it to england with the appropriate certifications, it isn't that bad really. No 6 months quarantine, and no double rabies vaccinations like they used to give. I guess people were getting pissed off about not being able to take US dogs to Crufts.
Oh good...my fiance' and I have discussed moving to England and I won't go unless the quarrantine is lifted. We moved here from Germany with our cats 4 years ago (no we're not military) and there was no problem. We just needed to get a little passport for them with their vac. records and we had to get a special stamp from the gov. It's probably the same with England..I mean, they don't care what's going, as long as it's not coming. And we already have rabies so we're not paranoid over here. Except Hawaii.
