I've tried using bitter apple but it doesn't work. She will chew the hair off of her front legs anytime she is alone. If I let her out back for a while and don't let her in right away she will start chewing on her leg. If she is in the house and I am out mowing the lawn or visiting with the neighbors, she chews her leg. Today we went to church and when I came home her hair was really chewed down. We were only gone for two hours...plus I gave her a bully stick to chew, that was gone and so was the hair on her leg. She has full run of the house when we are gone. I don't know what to do! Does anyone have any suggestions? Why does she do this?
This is something she has always done even when we had Lexie. It does seem to be getting worse though. If it were allergies wouldn't she do it all the time, not just when she is alone? Do you know if Oxyfresh is available at Petsmart?

This is another symptom of separation anxiety. If you can get her busy with something for longer(when your out), like a really good bone(not ingestible), and cover up her legs, and continue this for 5-6 weeks, she could break the habit. But you need to address the Separation anxiety. I guess you could try the cone but how will she eat the bone. Perhaps you could wrap them up.(legs)And she may just transfer the chewing to somewhere else, but its worth a try. Don't wait till your going out to give your dog a bone, make it a daily ritual, and leave her alone for short periods chewing her bone.
