I have recenlty noticed (recently being a few weeks) a small black spot on her tongue. She is a swedish elkhound, almost 7years old and I have never seen that spot before. It isn't a lump and it doesn't seem to have gotten any bigger but I am keeping an eye on it just in case it does. She's not pawing at it which is a good thing.
Has anybody had this happen before, is it in the breed, the age, could it be a disease or cancer?? I want to bring her to the vet but then they will run all these tests that are going to cost me hundreds upon hundreds of dollars and it could turn out to be nothing.
Please, any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated!!
By the way, I'm new here and I have 1 dog, Jesse, and 2 cats, Marty and Miikka (we named them after our favorite hockey players Martin Brodeur and Miikka Kiprusoff :P). This forum is very informative, I've learned a lot already about alot of you and have only been reading for like 10 minutes.
There are many breeds of dogs that get black spots on their tongues. Many people think only Chows get them (it's typical on their tongue), but I had an Afghan that also had black spots, and knew of a GSD that had black spots as well
Well you can take her in and have a chunk biopsied.
However, its probaly pigmentation. As the cells replace themselves they do not always grow back the same. Pigmentation can be randomly dropped onto places with constant cellular regrowith such as the tongue since the dog is programed for heavy dark pigment. Just like black gums, if you look at them month to month you will see the pattern changes.
i would have to say normal pigment also. all the mouth cancers i have seen have never looked like black spots on the tongue. most japaneses/chinese and northern breeds have black pigmentation on their tongues.
I feel much better now knowing that it's probably a normal thing and I shouldn't worry about it. If it does get worse though or if she starts pawing at it, I will bring her in definately to get it checked out.
I have a golden retriever with a black spot on her tongue, it just appeared one day. It doesn't seem to bother her at all, I never thought about cancer, just thought it was just a black spot, now I am concerned???
