Leaving Pup in Crate While Sleeping and Potty Train?
he keeps crying..

hi i just got an english bulldog puppy the other day (3 months old) and my goal is to potty train him to go outside when in need (i haven't been so successful yet)

well i'm letting him sleep in my room at night, but my biggest concern is that when i put him in his crate he just kept crying and crying until i let him out....

is keeping him in a crate all night till i wake up cruel?

should i not give in to his cries? will he eventually stop crying?

should i keep the open side of the crate towards me or not?


thanks for any tips! i feel so bad leaving him in there

Leave him in there. Right now hes doing a good job of training you, so flip the tables and train him back.

He is crying becuase he does not like it. He'd much more prefer to have his own way, do what he wants and not worry about it.

Dog ownership is more then companionship. Each of us takes on the responsibility to care for that young animal, mold it, and train it. Training is not always fun, but a dog who lives in our home must live up to certain health standards. Urine and fecies on the floor are unacceptable period, so you in no way are curel for forcing him to accept what he can do and mold his habits and patterns.

Thats what being a responsible dog owner is about. It takes time to create a good dog, but its time well invested for you, and others, as well as the dog.

Yeah you are definitely not making matters better by giving into his cries. WHen you do, he's thinking "Hmm.. I made a fuss and he came and let me out.. so If I keep doing this, he'll keep letting me out!!" You need to break that cycle right now :P

I dont know if my puppies are crazy, lol, but they love their crate. They think its wonderful that they have their one little area to chew toys, drink water, and just relax. To them, it's a punishment if i leave the crate door closed! At first I thought it was great, but then again that takes away the option to use a crate when they misbehave. But I agree with the others, all puppies cry when first introduced to the crate (with the exception of my crazed pups). Good luck with training!

We got Cody when he was 3 months old, the first two nights he slept in a box in the bedroom, then we got him is crate and put it in the dining room and at first when I put him in it I would lay on the floor beside him and talk softly to him and stroke his paw ( I feel I did this more for me than for him, he seemed ok with the crate but I must admit I missed him beside me at night lol) After about 3 weeks I weaned myself away and Cody has slept all night from the beginning. We didn't use the clock ticking or anything and no toys at night. The only problem we have is that he won't sleep in on the weekends. During the week we all get up at 5:30AM (believe it or not they have that hour in the morning) and so does he but he doesn't understand IT'S THE WEEKEND, sleep in! Please sleep in! If you let him out of the crate after he cries for 10 minutes the next time he will cry for 20 minutes because you have trained him to believe if he cries he will get his way. The longer you let him get his way the longer it will take him to settle into his crate. Put the crate in another room and close your bedroom door, turn up the radio and put head phones on if you have to BUT IGNORE HIM. He will eventually learn that this is what it is going to be.

My female does not like to be in the crate during the day or evening if she knows someone is home in the house and she cries but at night she knows it is what it is and that is that. My male will go into the crate on his own and take a just chill all on his own

i just wanted to thank everyone for the replies i can't get him to be quiet in his cage yet...he just won't stop- but i'll be trying- thanks again for the support everyone
