We just rec'd our mini-schnauzer who is very playfull with great temperment. As per breeder, I am pre-soaking her food with water as she does not drink water yet. No food/water after 6:00pm. She goes to sleep in her doggie crate at 10:00pm. First night, she woke up at 3:00am and started crying. I got her back to sleep in 3 mins but her crate was wet in the morning. Last night, same thing but I took her out for a pee. She went back to sleep and her crate was dry in the morning. Obviously, her bladder is still young and untrained. Do I take her out at 3:00am or let her pee at night in her crate and, as some have said, she will learn to hold her pee and not go in her crate where she sleeps. Thanks to all for comments.....
I find it mindboggling that you do not give your dog water. If your dog can eat, it can certainly drink. She may play in the water some but she will also drink some of it too. Put water down for your dog and leave it out, I sincerely doubt your dog is recieving enough water in her food alone.
Regarding the crate training, take her out at 3am to go potty, then put her bakc in her crate. If she ends up having to go in her crate a lot because she physically can't hold it, she'll learn that it's appropriate to go in there.
Let me clarify an obvious unclear point from my first post. I do place a water bowl down for my puppy...she simply does not drink from it. As per the breeder, the puppy's at this age play more with than drink from the water bowl and since it is important to get water, I should soak her food in it. I actually asked her at what time I no longer soak the food and she said once the pupy starts drinking water is when I no longer soak but I do it gradually.
Our pup was born April 25th so she is 8 weeks and 1 day. As I said earlier, I take her out at about 10:00pm or later, depending when I go to bed. I have not had her at the VET yet but I will be calling today to set up 1st appt. We leave the water for her all day except after her supper. I did note his morning that after she ate her water soaked breakfast, she started peeing about 10 mins. after (I had already taken her out for a pee as soon as we got up before breakfast) and continued peeing on and off for a good 20-30 mins. We would bring her out, she would pee twice, come in and pee again 3 mins after. I figure this is all the water from the food passing through her system. I am going to try to stay out with her for a good 30 mins. after each meal until he bladder matures a bit more. Any other tips/tricks?
Your puppy could potentially have a uti or somethign else wrong with it. Needing to pee every couple of minutes isn't the water passing through it's system.
A puppy should be able to have enough bladder control to hold it for however months old they are + 1. So a 2 month old dog should at maximum hold it 3 hours.
Making a dog stay in a wet crate will ruin its denning instinct, and make it harder to house break. Even if the pup has to get up to go potty every 2 hours, you have to take it. I still had to get up once a night even when mine was 4-5 months old to take her potty.
