I kept this quiet, because actually I was a bit embarassed that my dogs got smarter than me, but now that the puppies are running around, I have to tell someone.
You may remember that I have 2 small house dogs. Daisy is a Shih-tzu and Tyke is a Japanese Chin. Daisy was in heat this winter and I kept puppy pants on her while indoors and thought that I had watched them closely while they were outdoors, but evidently not.
By the time I realized that Daisy was pregnant (un-planned) she was too far along to abort the litter, I just couldn't do it.
We had a litter of 3 black and white puppies born last month. They are long-haired with flat faces and come by that trait honestly, since both parents have the flat face, too.
They have got to be the cutest puppies I have ever seen, I think they are even cuter than the purebred Shih-tzu puppies that Daisy had last year. Maybe I am partial to them, because I love Tyke so much.
I had them at the vet last week for shots and had their knees checked. Their daddy has mild luxating patellas and is going to be neutered because of that. I was told the knees look good so far, but wthey will need to be checked again as they get older.
Is anyone else as excited as me? I haven't told anyone about the puppies yet, except for a few people at work and today my neighbor came over to see them.
Am trying to get their pictures downloaded to dogster.com and will give you the links. They look like fluffy stuffed toys.
.............or sold on a strict spay/neuter contract
WHAT?? You are kidding, right? You are going to line your pockets with money off of mutts whose parents have genetic defects? And a spay/neuter contract? Do the right thing, have them s/n before they leave your home. Don't rely on others to do it. They won't and before you know it those dogs will be bred too!
They are so cute...congrats. I personally love all dogs accidents or not. Besides I know you would never let your pups end up in a shelter.
Duck - Although this may seem irresponsible for a normal person, this is Bassett_Lover we are talking about and she is not like that. Before you spout off and be rude you should really get to know the person. She would never let her dogs end up in a shelter. Apology accepted for being rude.
Duck Butter...I agree with you that pets "should" be spayed/neutered, but have you ever thought that maybe she hasn't spayed them because they are breeding dogs??? Maybe that's the reason, no need to be so rude about it, we all understand.
She is allowed to sell the puppies if she wishes, whether they're "mutts" as you call them, or pure-bred. Personally, I prefer the mixed-breed over a pure-breed anyday!!! Even if they're parents do have genetic defects, it doesn't necessarily mean that the puppies will enherit them, didn't you read her post?? She brought them to the vet, got them checked out and they are fine for now, she will get them checked again later.
Let's all be happy for the new "mommy" and the actual mommy, and be happy that they are all healthy!
I still can't believe though what you said about 3 less dogs being adopted from a shelter, who even says any dogs will be adopted at a shelter in the next 3 months!! You can't say stuff like that, it's very innapropriate.
Seriously, Duck Butter, as a newcomer you should get to know people a bit better before judging and making harsh criticisms. And dogs mixed with two breeds shouldn't be called "mutts," in my book a mutt is a dog whose breed is unknown, and even then I don't think "mutt" should be used as an insult, it's just for lack of a better word.
Bassett, congratulations on your pups! They are adorable! I'm sorry you felt like you couldn't talk about it on here, but I'm glad you've told us about them. I think you'll have no trouble finding homes for them, they are gorgeous!

Ignore the duck thing cuz its just trying to get people mad.
I have heard that the earlier you start supplements the better,so maybe ask the vet if you started them on joint ones really early if they have less of a chance of bad knees. Hope you find them great homes! They are cuties.
IP: Logged 8:44:30 PM 2/3/2005 A gal that I work with was telling me that her friend is raising a litter of Labradoodles. I told her that they are just a mixed breed dog, she said no, they are a recognized breed. Give me a break.
I almost choked when she told me that they are going to ask $850 for them. That is unbelievable. Are there really people dumb enough to pay $850 for a dog that isn't even a purebred?
You could buy a good Lab or a good Poodle for that amount, but a mixed breed dog? Insane.

IP: Logged 1:42:52 PM 3/14/2005 Did I read that right or is this a joke? $699 for a mixed breed dog? Is that serious?
My only other question is why?
I have been catching up on some of the older threads the past few days and was happily excited to see how much discouragement of crossbreeding goes on here. Thats one reason I like this place and tried so hard to find it.
Now, one of your regulars ends up with a littler of crossbred pups and now its ok? Give me a break. No, I'm not perfect, and don't claim to be (thanks for trying to put words in my mouth), but there is just NO excuse for a litter of mixed bred mutts!!
An "accident" is only a way to put it softly. Tell that to the dogs when they end up in the pound. No one can guarantee where these pups will end up. No one!
I have ready some pretty foul threads here about crossbreeding, but that was before one of your regulars did it, huh?
people like duck butt who are so perfect and would never ever be irresponsible kinda make me want to puke.
basset the fact that you admit your mistake and have a good plan for the puppies is enough for me. you coulda said you were going to sell them for a couple thousand a piece after you breed them when they are 8 months old to the neighbors pit bull....now that woulda been a reason to throw a hissy.
My mouth is literally falling open at how you all are encompassing an accidental breeding here knowing that the puppies are going to be SOLD!
Maybe I need to quote some more of you so that you can remember what your pet values were.
It doesn't matter WHO does this kind of thing. Just because they are a regular poster here doesn't give them any special privelages. It shouldn't be done at all. If it was really an accident (and her first time) then the dogs need to be given away for free. Why sell a mutt?
I bet the reason you just now brought the issue up was because you were embarassed of what you had said about others in the past and now you are the one doing it!
Ahhhhhhhh, what prescious little pups! Basset, you shouldn't have had to hide this from anyone on this forum. It sounds like most of the people know who you are on here, and wouldn't have passed judgement on you. Afterall this is a mini support system in my eyes. Good luck to you and your new little babies...
Duck, it shouldn't even matter how much she is going to sell them for...In her previous posts, she was just stating that it was a pretty high price to pay for a mixed-breed dog, nowhere did she refer to them as "mutts" like somebody else who shall remain nameless. I don't think any mixed breed dog should be referred to in that manner.
It's nice to see that you've been catching up on your reading but it still won't do any good. Saying that mixed-breed dog shouldn't happen, who do you think you are??? Are you for real?? I'm sorry to sound so rude but you're the one that needs the wake up call. I'm sure you probably have a "pure-bred" dog right?? Well, I'm curious to find out what breed he/she is because you know, all breeds were once cross-bred to become a specific type of dog, so everyone has a "mutt" sitting at their feet.
You don't have to criticize everything that happens, she was looking out for her female, thinking that the underwear thingies (sorry, don't know what they're actually called :P) might work, but hey, stuff happens right??? Would you also say stuff like this when you find out that 2 people of a different race had a child?? But that's a totally different topic that shouldn't even be discussed, and neither should this one. I think we should leave it at Basset_Lover has beautiful new puppies who she loves very much, and she can do whatever she wants to do with them!
By the way Basset_lover, I would totally love to adopt one of your babies, but I know my boyfriend would kill me! LOL :P Oh and I was FINALLY able to look at the pictures OMG they are adorable!!!! (my stupid computer just hates me)
***Edited By: canucktigger on 6/23/2005 3:07:16 PM*** Reason: finally saw the pictures!!
