DUCK: It sounds like by Basset_lover's posting that they were embarassed to begin with and already knew that this litter would be criticized. I'm sure they know that it is mixed, but once you have those puppies in your home and in your arms, all you can do is love them and feel blessed that the mom and the babies are okay. And as SYRN11 points out- even dogs adopted at a shelter will cost a fee, it costs money to make sure the pups are healthy- no one should be made to feel guilty to spend money taking care of pups and try to break even when selling the pup. Would you rather Basset_lover not take the pups to the vet than just sell them?? At least they'll have a better chance at life, no matter what their lineage is... and if someone can't afford the fee to buy a dog- old, puppy, purebred, mixed breed- they probably can't afford to take care of a dog well either.

Basset, grats on the puppies and good luck finding them homes. I know you are trying to do right by your babies. I'm sorry Tyke has some bad knees, at least you know now before it suddenly comes up as a problem later in life.
Duck Butter, if she'd originally planned on keeping both dogs for possible breeding (just not with each other), that'd be an excellent reason for them not being altered. Regarding the accidental breeding, it does happen, even to good breeders. As Jeff Goldblum said in Jurassic Park "Life finds a way."
As dogs have to be at least 2 years old before they can be OFA certified, it's perfectly reasonable that she didn't know about a possible health problem until after the fact.
Regarding selling the puppies, only an idiot gives puppies away for free IMHO. They can be used for snake food or dog fight bait or worse. If someone can't afford to pay a nominal adoption fee, then how do you know they can afford to give the dog basic care? In addition, she said said "If I do find new homes for any of them, they'll either be spayed or neutered before leaving here or sold on a strict spay/neuter contract."
Basset, good luck with the puppies and finding them great homes. Are you already in search or have you got anyplace lined up yet?
Another thing, I adopted a beagle from a humane society. The vet is almost 100% positive he is purebred. Not knowing his history we can't be sure. So even purebreds can be found in shelters and humane societies nothing is a guarantee. Mix breed, purebred or mutts all can have the same fate if they are lost or stolen or run a ways.
GOD!!! No wonder Basset_Lover was scared to post this!!! Duck Butt, give her a freaking break!! She admitted it was an accident, what else can she say?? What can be done now?? Do you want her to put them all to sleep just because that's "3 less dogs that will get adopted from shelters?" Give me a break!! You're not perfect either, so don't preach to her about stuff SHE ALREADY KNOWS ABOUT!!
Basset_Lover, your pups are VERY cute!! If I could have another one, I might just drive right on up to MI to get one of yours!! They are ADORABLE!! Congrats!!
AMEN SRYN! I think some people really need to realize that they can have their opinion but most people do not agree with the connection about 3 more puppies coming into this world, thats 3 less in the shelter...its no different than when 2 more children are born into this world, that is 2 less children that will be taken out of foster care.....those people who take bassets might have no interest in shelter dogs and thats their perogative (sp?)
Basset-Its been said, but we know you will do right by those lil puppies :)
Hippy99 No, that's not true...if they would have been forthcoming like Bassett_Lover about the situation then it would be ok, if they were going to find homes for the pups like she is then it would be ok, if they take good care of them like her then it would be ok....
See the patern....or shall I point that out to you as well.
Congratulations on your new puppies. They are ADORABLE! I'm sure you'll have no problem finding them a good home...and even if you wouild want to ask $1000 for each, go right ahead, it shouldn't be anyone's business. They're not paying your vet bills.
Ignore the criticism and especially DuckButt's. People like that are not worth giving them the time of day. No one should feel uncomfortable or embarrased to share such great news with the board. I thought the purpose of this forum was to share our pet expierences, exchange ideas and help each other with any question or concern.
We are all pet owners of pure breeds, cross breeds, mutts...no matter what you call them, they are our pets and are part of our families. It's no ones business what we decide to do within our families. Keep your rude comments to yourselves.

Thanks for all of the wonderful comments. They are very cute babies and I just had to share their pictures with all of you. My Mom would like to keep one of the puppies, but isn't sure, since she has the Chihuahua and the Pit Bull MIX already(did you notice I said MIX - Ducky?).
I did not post this thread with the intentions of selling them and nowhere in my post can I find my mention of asking people to buy them, so I don't know why old Ducky has their pants all in a bundle.
I am very well aware of how to find prospective homes for my puppies if I need to Ducky. As stated, I did not plan for this litter to happen, however it did and we will live with the results. What do you propose? That anyone with a mixed breed dog takes it to the vet and has it euthanized? Is that your solution?
I know the proper way to screen prospective parents as I raised and sold AKC Labrador Retrievers for 24 years, so this is not my first litter of dogs. It is my first litter of mixed breed dogs, but that doesn't mean that I will love them any less than my purebreds.
I'm very proud of the fact that I raised quality Labs and have followed many of them in their show careers and hunting careers and remained friends with their owners.
At Christmas time I get more cards in the mail from people that I've sold my Lab puppies to, than I do from family and friends. If you knew me, you'd also know that I carry a picture album with me, sporting photos of my "grand-puppy" kids.
Yes, I have said that I am appalled at people that charge $699 (that sounds like a petstore price), $850 and upwards to $2000 for a mixed breed dog, that they intentionally breed. In my books that is ridiculous, as a purebred AKC registered dog with proper health testing can be had for that amount.
If I came online and said look at my website and see all the mixed breed puppies that I am cranking out, then I can see where you'd have reason to bitch, but I did not and you do not.
Thanks to all who took the time to look at my puppies. Even if the litter was not intended, it happened and I certainly won't have them euthanized. I take wonderful care of my animals and am well known in the Mid-west region for my Labs.
I am NOT embarassed for anything that I have said on this website to anyone in the past. I can stand behind what I say, I don't rant and rave like you, but I get my point of view across in a mature manner.
You on the other hand, have some serious growing up to do. Do you even have a dog? I certainly hope not, seeing that you have a very immature and somewhat volatile attitude.
Once again, thanks to everyone for re-affirming the fact that I have some beautiful puppies. Mixed breed or not. Intended or not. They are well loved.
