I have a miniature schnauzer puppy I picked up from breeder 1 week ago. She is now 9 weeks old - very active and playfull. Breeder advised me that to avoid puppy growing too fast and therefore not putting too much stress on joints, she feeds her puppies Science Diet Adult small bites (made by Hills)pre-soaked to soften. I had her at vet yesterday for first visit and all is great with puppy. I was discussing with Vet what breeder told me to feed her. He said that he is not overly concerend with Joint problems in mini-schnauzer and he suggested I use another Hills product called Prescription Diet (P/D) Canine. Since both are made by same company, what is difference? Accoridng to vet, the P/D has a few more things that puppy needs. Some may think he was just getting me to buy something else however, they gave me a HUGE bag for free. HELP. I am having puppy food confusion !!!!!!
Just a couple observations, take them fwiw. First off there can be a huge difference in foods from one manufacturer so don't assume they are the same. Secondly sci diet is way overpriced for the quality you are getting.
I have fed Diamond Lamb and Rice for years and have no medical problems to speak of and have wonderful skin and coats. It has no corn and except for rice only minimal grains. Diamond puppy on the other hand has corn and not so impressive of an ingredient list. But my pups have done well on it. Diamond chooses very minimal advertising and sell a very good (mid grade) product at about 2/3 the price of the lower quality sci diet and iams.
Hills diet is really crappy too. My vet prescribed Hilld T/D for teeth. Protein content was only l6% and it was full of corn. It may have been good for her teeth, b ut was bad for anything else. Science diet is no-so good, either. If you have a local feed store, theres much better foods out there, ask someone. If all you have is petsmarts/petcos, try natural balance, sensible choice, neutro. Better than science diet, I think
