Dobermans are one of the more expensive breeds out there when purchased from a good breeder. $800 for a pet and upwards of $1500 for a show quality price are not unusual, when the parents have had OFAed hips, are tested for vWD andother health problems.
Thanks, my husband wants one day to get one and said they were cheaper then bulldogs and I thought they weren't. I was right, um shock there :) I think when we do get one it would be a pet only, I'm not into the whole show thing and that is why I've always adopted from shelters and such but he really wants a purebred from a good breeder.
Dobermans are insanely competitive in the conformation breed ring. I've heard it's virtually impossible to get one to Ch without haivng a professional handler. Howver, just because you aren't intereested in conformation doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of things you can do with your dogs. Dobes do wonderfully in tracking, agility, obedience, and if you decide to go through the rigors of it, schutzhund training. The cover dog for this months' Dog World magazine is the Doberman PInscher, you should pick up this issue from a bookstore or store in your area.
As Minn stated some breeds are major compitition. Sit back and decide what you want to do and how badly you want to win. If you don't mind trotting around to local shows and just showing for the fun of it, go for it. But if you want to go on a true competitive level, be prepared for it not to be as pretty a picture.
Anyway cost, I'd expect 1500+ for a show quality dog. Dependent on kennel even more.
My husky came from a Doberman Pinscher and Siberian Husky breeder. Most of the prices I saw for Dobes were $1200.00 and up. Ears already done (well tail too, but thats done much earlier). Something you might look at, as some people want natural ears - big and floppy. Some people want the ears done, but don't have a vet that will do them, or the vet isn't good at doing them. Having the ears done can get very expensive if you don't know how to take care of them. If they are already done, you know how well they stand or not.

Show quality, your looking at that $1500 they mentioned EASILY, if your not intrested in showing, it would obviously be cheaper. I have seen hobby breeders sell for much , much less, but beware of what your getting from inexperienced breeders
sorry syrn i just have to laugh. this has nothing really to do with your thread but every time i see you write dobby's i think of the charcter in the second harry potter movie and not dobies lol. sorry =)
