There is a by-law here that states "A dog owner shall not permit, suffer or allow a dog to be at large". If that means what I think it means, than the next time her dogs come after my dogs, I will be calling the animal control officers to come check out the situation. She is clearly in violation of they by-law here.
I'll let you know if anything happens. Again, thanks for all your suggestions and help everybody.
I hope some day to be free or haressement from these dogs, we should be able to walk without any problems, but nooooo, because of some irresponsible owner, there's no such luck.
I have a fenced in yard and I do let my dogs run loose within the fenced yard. I have taught my dogs manners though.
My neighbor has a St. Bernard and a street mix and these dogs do not have any manners at all. When ever my wife or myself walk in our driveway these dogs charge the fence and bark and growl at us so I fixed them. I walk my male doberman next to the fence on leash of course and when these dogs charge him he picks up his leg and pees in their face. I told my neighbor about this and now she is upset and calls the dogs because she is tired of giving them baths.
By the way, I make my dog walk where he is in plain site of the neighbor when he pees on their dogs.
no you shouldn't canuck, you should not have to limit your walk. I really do not know how to put this anyother way. If those dogs decide to attack, will that kind of thinking heal your wounds. or maybe your dogs wounds. I have certain neighbors dogs who do the same kind of thing. i just avoid them. Because I do not want anything bad to happen. obviously they are not being responsible adults and taking control of thier dogs. but someone has to be an adult here. for Saftey's sake.
canuck, here's my two sense....people may not like it, but here goes... who cares about laws when people dont always choose to follow them. i always walk Coach with a baseball bat as my walking stick. . i have a ball in the little backpack i carry with his poopy bags and doggy wipes. if you have a ball with your bat, no-one can argue that you werent playing baseball and just walking home now. that may seem harsh, but when its your animal that you love and you know other dogs may not be as controlled as yours; you must be safe. too much has happened with my mom walking two little bichons. she has had other dogs jump the fence on her, other dogs not being controlled by their owners, or another dog chasing a squirrel or rabbit. i just like to be prepared, and i will be damned if i see my dog get hurt when i could have helped. i can get a lawyer, not another Coach!
I agree that it is probably best to just avoid them. That's what I've ended up doing here. But it is extremely frustrating to not be able to take my own dogs out. Yes, we have a fenced in yard too, and guess whose dogs come and try to get into my yard, not my dogs trying to get out.
As far as leash law and AC, well at least here it's pretty much pointless. We have a leash law, no dogs off leash period. It's not enforced at all.
I can certainly see all sides here. Just this evening I went out front to get my mail and here comes the four dogs barking and running at me. Now, they are all small dogs so I'm not afraid of them myself, I just yelled at them to go home. But, if I had one of my dogs with me, that's a whole different story.
To the poster about the collie, sorry I forgot who it was, glad you had a happy ending there.
I don't want anything to happen to these dogs, I really dont' want AC to pick them up because I'm not at all sure that the owners would even go pay the fine and pick them up, they would then be pts. All I want is for the owners to be responsible. Wishful thinking I guess. I don't understand why they aren't at least afraid the dogs will get run over, we live on a rather busy street and they run back and forth from our side of the street to the park across the street all the time. And I mean every single day.
GUNNY - You can say that my dog might get attacked by these 2 dogs all you want, and say that she will get hurt if I don't change my route, but I'm not willing to let that happen anytime soon (trust me, neither is she).
My dog is very dog-to-dog agressive when she's on leash (and we're working on that slowly but surely), and trust me, if another dog were trying to hurt her, I would not let that happen and she wouldn't either. She'd fight back and win, trust me. She's a tough old girl who doesn't let anyone step on her toes. And neither am I, like owner, like dog.
TOSAMOM - I know people will judge you from your answer, but not I. I totally understand where you're coming from. Myself, being a victim of a dog bite when I was younger from this stray I thought was nice and started petting (hey, kids don't know any better), I value mine and my dog's life over anything else anyday and carry pepper spray in my purse, at hands reach, just in case something were to happen.
GINA - Sorry, I didn't read your post first because I guess we posted at the same time :P...Like I mentioned, I'm not going out of my way just because an irresponsible owner doesn't have control over her damn dogs. I am going to do something about this, whether it be from a suggestion on this board (who knows which one) or by calling animal control and finding out what they can do (we live in BC so they're very friendly and understanding here).
I have rights, our yard is fenced and my dog is not allowed out of the fenced area unless I am with her and she is on leash. Other dogs walk by and she'll bark at them, that's normal, but I bring her in right away because I know how annoying it is. It's also in the back yard so she can't come running up to the fence and charge and growl at people walking by, she just watches them from afar. I can't believe people are actually this stupid! You'd think they would want what's best for their dog and yet still don't have a clue!
I am NOT changing my walking route, NOT taking this anymore and NOT allowing those dogs to harass us walking by anymore. Either myself, my boyfriend or animal control will have something to do with this VERY soon.
cantigger...i sympathise with you...althought i dont live in a city or subdivision..i never ever let me dogs off leash or not in there pened in fenced area...if they were to attack..being shepherds...they have a bad enough reputation any way./..i dont want them to go to the pound for 10 days to pick up germs from the strays..and for there own saftey...i dont want them hurt, hit with a stick or hit by a car...I try very hard to keep people and my pets safe..I would in your case call and find out what the rules are in your area for sure..and see what animal control says as to your options..just the fact that she has no control shows that these dogs if not excited to run up to you...might run up and cause a kid to fall in the street...possably get hurt or run over..or they themselves could get in the street and run over..its time we all took responcability for our own pets...pretty simple in my book..but not everyone does it..thats for sure..I hope this gets resoplved..and no hard feelings with the neighborhood...your in the right to walk on leach with your dog..so..thats my 2 cents...Take care and happy walking.
