what to do if ingested?

hi there... i was reading the posts on finding the fly maggots in the dog food.. this just happened to me lastnight, and it was disgusting indeed.

my question is: is the dog going to be ok? did you need to bring your dog to the vet, or do these die on their own?

digestive acid in the stomach + live maggots = partially digested dead maggots. Gross but doubtful there's long term effects.

thanks... that's what i thought, and that's what my online maggot research' told me, but i wanted to get thoughts from others that might have been in the same situation.

don't they eat maggots on fear factor? yuck.

Are you sure your dog ate the food with the maggots?

Riley would not touch his when they were in his food, which is what made me throw it out and discover them.

unfortunately, yes... i noticed him poking around with his poo, which he doesn't normally do. so i took a close look at the poo and saw a wormy thing in it. thinking he had worms, i thought i would bring him into the vet this morning... then i cleaned out his bowl and that's where i discovered the source. i live in this old spanish-y type house, and the landlady doesn't seem to feel screens are necessary on the ancient windows, so flies get in. i noticed they were by his food on monday. i didn't even realize this could happen... the food is definitely going in the fridge if he's not eating it.

any thoughts for keeping the flies off?

Pretty gross isn't it? Rileys food got the maggots because he is a darn slob and gets tons of water into his food dish. I didn't clean it out right away and it got maggots.

I've seen bowls at pet supply stores that are supposed to keep bugs away. Maybe give that a try.

Flies lay their eggs in the food. Food has to be wet thou. Never seen maggots on dry food.

Btw, they lay eggs in poop too. That is how the maggots get there, not from the food.

Also you may want to make sure that the dog doesn't have tapeworms. They look similar to maggots and would be in their poop too.

I was told tapeworms look like grains of rice. Arent maggots much bigger?

Chances are that it wasn't maggots but meal worms. They can get infested very easily in the factory and then you buy the dog food or dog bones, bring them home and you then get them every where. We got them from a box of dog bones once and had to have the house sprayed with dust (it kills them). We wrote a letter to the company and they ended up paying 1/2 the bill and giving us coupons for free stuff (which we never used).
