Jeezus Khrist! Okay people, let's say I'm walking my pit on a leash, minding my own buisness when this huge dog comes up to us and starts growling at my dog. Now, I'm still holding on to the leash and telling my dog to stay (and even if he doesn't stay, I'm pulling him away by his leash). I start to slowly back away from this dog when the dog attacks my dog...at this point I'm going to let go of the leash and let my pit defend himself and hopefully he will win. WHAT is the big deal about this? Am I supposed to let my dog get beat up because I'm afraid of bsl? yes, I'm concerned as they are banned in a big city around where I live but I'm not going to let him get beat up and possibly get killed by another dog without him trying to at least defend himself. By the way, I am (barely) 5'5-122 pounds, there is no way I could defend myself against any of these dogs that run around here. Sometimes I have to call my boyfriend for him to escort me out of the house when I spot one of these venomous creatures that are called dogs around here. And I still stand by my statement when a pit bull is grown it does NOT need to have dog friends!
Your pit may not start a fight ,but it sure as hell wont back down from one either. Then what are you going to do when you can't break it up.As a responsible pit owner it's part of your reponsiblilty to avoid fights at any cost.
"How about when some one is sueing your*****because your dog just killed some ones foo foo. They take your dog away and kill it because it's a menace to society. " Are you telling me that if someone attacks you you'll just stand there and let them kick your a$$ because you're scared of a law suit? How will my dog be a menace to society if he's only defending himself from a dog that attacked FIRST?
"And I agree with rednosered. You don't let your pit fight at any cost. It will always have a bad outcome." *WOW* really? okay so I'll just let my dog get mauled to death while some other dog kicks his ass. I won't let him fight back, I'll just let the other dog kill him. If I can avoid a fight between my baby you damn right I will. I hate fights I cannot even stand to see humans fight let alone dogs. Please believe that I will NOT go out looking for a dog fight. I love pit bulls I have met alot of them and they are very gentle and sweet. I would love to add one to my family to love, befriend and nurture....I would never want him injured in any way shape or form but if he needs to protect himself I will let him.
I wish you could understand. When I say I raise pitbulls, people about have a heart attack on me. It's "Oh my god," "Why do you raise such mean creatures." It doesn't matter. The city's, towns are all out to ban the breed everywhere because of them fighting. It's not fair and never will be. You have to except that as a pitbull owner.
And I never walk my dog on a leash in town for that very same reason. If another dog that isn't on a leash starts a fight yeah my dog will kill it. That is why I do not let it happen. I live in the country, my dogs stay in the country. Frankly, people like you do not need pits in town! or anywhere for that matter.
YBR Pits, You are absolutely right about avoiding dangerous places and I will try my hardest to do this. I am obviously a novice to this breed and just this year I've become interested in them. I plan on getting one next year (with more education of course) and I will do my best in raising my dog and giving him a loving and safe life without him (hopefully) ever getting into a fight.
I am glad you are learning about the breed before you get one. Pits are not like any other. And people hate them. All I ever here is, Oh I heard some pitbull got ahold of a baby. We live 20 miles from the closest town. We moved to the country because every town around us has banned pits. Not only that, but not one of these towns has ever had a "pitbull incident" There has never been anyone hurt, or any dog hurt. The cops will shoot, just because it looks like a pit and it was coming towards them. Pits have a bad rap, and us pitbull owners have to defend there reputation. Just be prepared to take the heat because you will get it. Especially in town. No one wants them. We got into weight pulling and showing our dogs because it is an accepted sport and the dogs love it.
ShaDiamond -- you say you have to call your boyfriend to escort you...Have you ever tried pepper spray ?? I think one of the problems here is you are saying you want your dog to kick butt..as a priority. No one expects you to hold your dog down while another dog is killing it...but I am wondering why this seems like such a probable event to you ? I am not understanding why it is you feel like a dog is your only means of safety. There are many other options. Maybe I'm not understanding the area where you live, but there should be many alternatives available to you. Having ANY breed of dog as the purpose of being an attack dog is not for the everyday person. That's better left to the professionals.
Shadiamond= It takes a experience dog owner to properly own a Pit. They are powerful dogs. As most 'bully' breed they require some one who it dominate with no question. If you are unable to keep your dog from fighting another you should choose a breed that is easier to handle. If you can't control a pit from biting a dog then you can keep it from biting a person. If it bit a person your are likely to be in trouble with the law and the dog would be put down. I think pits are wonderful dogs in the right hands. I could never own one because I know I am not at a place in my life where a pit would get the kind of training it would need. If you are so worried about your safety choose a device that you can control like a taser or pepper spray as mentioned above.
Sunny, I do have OC pepper spray for humans, I don't know if it would work on dogs though. I'm kinda scared to try to spray one of them because what if I miss and spray myself and I end up on the floor, if that happens I'm in deep s%$! and if I do end up spraying the dog what if it becomes even more angry and really tries to attack me? *sigh* I have tried AC and they've been here quite a few times but they tell me the dogs belong to people on a different block, I then ask them to please talk to the owners or confiscate these dogs and I just end up getting a whole bunch of retarded talk. Everytime I call now I get an impatient person at the other line who doesn't even care. I have had it with these baracudas called dogs! I'm not getting the dog soley to attack other dogs it's not even part of the reason why I want a pit bull. As I've written before, I hate fighting with a gist! I would never purposely subject my dog to it.
it is sometimes difficult to completely understand what someone has wrote/ i am glad you clarified what you were trying to say. i own a guardian breed which from what i have heard from other asd owners their dogs have easily killed both pits and chows. now understanding that these dogs have trespassed on their flocks and did not heed the warning of the asd. i have socialized my asd extensively so when she sees other dogs she views them as friends. i have no doubt that if me or my family or someone she considers hers were being threatened in any way she would act appropriately. but i want to be able to take her places w/o having to be in a battle everywhere we go. i do not think you should expect your dog to lie there and be killed but i can't imagine it would be much of a joy to be walking your dog and have it constantly trying to start fights. and yes dogs do need friends. they are essentially pack animals and need companionship.
Scout 1 I would just like to make one correction to you about pits.Pits are not pack animals with other dogs . Most pit owners will tell you that if they have more then one dog in the house hold the pit when the dog matures has to be permantely serperated from the other dog. They do better as the only dog.I do have 2 same sex dogs ,but Piper is still only a puppy(6 months). I'm prepared if I have to where I may have to permantely serperate them.I've always been lucky where my dogs have gotten along ,like Noey and Tigger and Sadie and Tigger.Pits are pack animals with their humans.
It's too bad that AC won't confiscate the dogs a few times, and their owners would have to pay a fine to get them back. That might solve a lot. When you call AC, try asking to talk to the person who is IN CHARGE...maybe you will get somewhere. I feel bad that you don't feel safe walking to your home because of irresponsible dog owners. You can try pepper spray..it should work well...however, your right...you don't want to miss and tick the dog off. Stun type guns require you be pretty close to the dog...there are sonic alarms that hurt the dogs ears....as a last resort (I had to do this once) you can get a paintball gun. It will sting them for sure, but won't break the skin. Then they have to go back home with a big paint splotch..kinda give the owners a message too. However...all these 'remedies' will probably only anger a truly vicious dog. I think forcing AC to do something is still your best bet.
