With other animals they are not at all pack animals. They can get along ,but must be supervised at all times with other animals. When left alone they must be seperated. They do much better as solitary animals.I like having 2 ,and so far i've been very lucky. With humans they bond very strongly. They love their human famalies.
I have a group of friends that all have pit bulls (myself included). I have noticed that the dogs with frequent social interaction, are actually gentle and playful with other dogs and people of all ages. We do not raise our dogs to be aggressive, but moreover to "show off". I give my pit very much attention and praise, and he is very loyal. I've also noticed that if you give your dog plenty of attention, affection, and proper discipline, he will be very obedient, and gentle, even with children. He will also protect his family if any harm were to come to them, much like a loyal dog is supposed to, and much like his owner would do for him. You will get out of these dogs what you put into them. If you don't want the dog to be mean, don't roughhouse with him or let other people do it. He'll know how and when to protect his family, on instinct.
A well bred pit is a very human friendly dog . It's in their nature. On the other hand they are animal aggressive, just some more then others.A good saying for pit owners, never trust a pit not to fight.
Gamebred Pit Bulls have wonderful temperaments and intellegence. I don't think I understand ShaDiamond at all. You should avoid danger and fights, you shouldn't train a dog to be aggressive. Even if a dog is starting a fight or wanting to bite you how can you stand idly by and watch your dog take a life from another? That is cruel. If you broke it up, most likely that other dog is going to run away as fast as it can to safety with its tail tucked. You just don't make sense asking if you should just let your dog get beat up? No one ever said to let your dog get beat up. There is no way to really do that a Pit Bull is really going to defend as is most other dogs? So what are you talking about. How is letting the dog go and taking no responsibility solving anything? People are right getting sued can cost a lot of money, and you can loose your insurance and your dog will be put down. That doesn't show love to me. A lot fo gamebred Pit Bulls are not aggressive and were not bred to be that way. But they are going to defend themselves. its your job to release your dog from the other. "I'm going to let go of the leash and let my pit defend himself and hopefully he will win. WHAT is the big deal about this? Am I supposed to let my dog get beat up because I'm afraid of bsl?" So I'm just a little confused person. ShaDiamond (or anyone) please explain how (I mean physically or scienctifically maybe?) is it possible to "stand there and let a dog get beat up". I'm really not getting it. How could a human do that, hold there dog down or something? These statements and other just dont make sense for me. I hardly see a Pit Bull getting beat up in any situation and from the sounds of this post the owner is going to let fo of the leash and stand there but the dog won't be getting beat up??????
It seems like he's never seen 2 dogs fight. Puppies rely on the owner for their defense. In the dogs mind, you are the alpha, its your job to protect your dog. If running into a stray dog is such a problem, buy some pepper spray and carry it with you. If you run into a stray dog with or without your dog, its your job to try and get rid of the stray. TK
WOW umm i think i'm going to keep my mouth shut on this one, but i will say this, you need pepper spray not a dog!!! You have no idea what you getting yourself into if you want a APBT for that reason. That is the last thing we need more headlines saying PIT ATTACKS!!!!!!!
OOHH YEAH was just watching the news and there was a "pit bull" attack wonder if it was really a pit bull!!! Anyways that is the reason why some people don't need to own a pit bull!!! OOHH yeah i'm calling this one a troll!!!
This thread was made awhile ago guys.... I was upset because there were these big dogs that used to scare the hell out of me and my neighbors so, I thought that if they did attack me then my dog could protect me from them. We finally got ac to do something about it and ever since then, no problems. I've learned alot since I made this thread and I would never let my dog fight.
APBT are great dogs as long as they are in the right hands. i hope that if you do decide to get one that you will not let it fight. I'm glad that you have learned alot since then and i can only hope that you put it to good use if you are to own a APBT.
When people ask, "What is the best breed to get?" I don't recommend the American Pit Bull Terrier because this breed is definately not right for everyone. When I got my first pit bull and most people know how I got her, I spent hours on the internet and hours pouring over books finding out about the history of the breed and any information I could get. I still learn things everyday about the breed. That's what people need to do who want an APBT.
Hi! I'm new here and I have been breeding pitties all my life, and I just have to say that I am 5'2 and I have defended my pits before. I can't just sit back and watch as my dog gets mauled. Every responsible Pit Bull owner should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS have a breaking stick. If you don't know what a breaking stick is, than may I ask why you have the breed? Not to be rude or anything it's just a question. But anyways, I just thought I'd put in my 2 cents. :-) ~Koren Kieser~ Body Builder Bullies
I fully, strongly agree with pearl and sunny. If you want protection from stray animals, then I suggest you get pepper spray or some other kind of weapon. You dont need a pit bull to fend off dogs for you.
If your pit attacks saving you then YOU will not have pet pitbull anymore it will turn and want to kill every dog it see's . With this breed its really good if you learn how to control these strays its really not that hard and if you still can say i cant, then the pit will have you rapped around its paw and proberbly turn aggressive any way. You want the dog to be game to protect you in your worst senario. I think its the dogs need protecting from YOU.
I'm so shocked to read this. I am an APBT owner and I am reading this with my jaw dropped to the floor. I researched this breed extensively before I decided on owning one and everyday I still research more and more because they are a very unique breed. I own a 9 mo APBT and I take every opportunity to socialize him. I'm glad that ShaDiamond learned something through this site because we don't need anymore aggressive pits out there running around, even if it is for "protection"
Proud, RESPONSIBLE APBT owner ***There is nothing better than sleeping beside an APBT***
This is a very old thread which I never saw before. I find it extremely sad and having a ton of misinformation as well as some facts on it.
I always suggest to potential and also new owners that you read up and understand the history of the dog, train and socialize, but not at off lead dog parks they are a huge No-NO. I guarantee that even if you are not at fault at a dog park you will be blamed simply for the breed due to the public stigma. Sad but true.
Game means a dog has been tested in a fighting ring which is illegal in all 50 states
Gamebred means from game tested bloodlines which all APBTs go back to since it is part of their heritage but some have it closer up in their pedigrees than others
Being game bred does not necessarily mean you have a dog that would be game if tested
Having Dog aggression does not always mean you have a game dog
Also neither dog aggression or a game dog means that the dog is human aggressive. Those three things are all different. A cur is a breed of dog and also a historic term used by old time dog men to mean a dog that wasn't game.
Well bred APBTs should never be people aggressive.
I know the person who original posted this is propbably nopt around any more, but APBTs are not reccommended as protection dogs because of their great love of people
Also they should not be used to protect you from loose dogs. File a police report and complaint with AC every time there is a loose dog. If they blow you off honestly I'd get an attorney and file charges against the town as it is their responsibility to keep you safe and respond to calls. Carry Pepper spray if it is legal in your town as well just in case. That is a better option than turning a dog out to fight. That is just ignorant IMO
If something happened accidentally it would be a different story but it sounds like this person has it all planned out. That's sick.
People who are like this should not own the breed
Hope this clears things up a bit
