Blood in runny stool w/ vomiting HELP~OLD topic
My dog started to have runny stools this morning and small traces of blood are present.

I adopted a dog from the animal shelter exactly one week ago. I took him to the Bay for the day yesterday and on the way home he vomited in the car. Then around 2am he had diarrhea in the house (first time going to the bathroom inside, has been house broken) and I noticed a small (1/4 tsp) of bright red blood. He also vomited around that same time. When I woke up at 7am there was another accident with the same amount of blood. He then had one more accident around 2pm. I dont know if he ate some thing on the beach or in the woods while we were taking a walk, or if it is some thing else. He was de-wormed and every thing when I got him last week. He also has really bad gas. I have never had a dog before and I dont know what to do. Please help!!!!!!!

You need to get your dog to the vet. Blood in stool is never an easy fix matter. There isn't really anything ot suggest in the meantime, except take him in asap.

I have a different opinion, if your dog is having bowel or stomach problems. I would withhold food for 24 hrs and then start feeding white rice mixed with his food. This gives the bowel and stomach time to settle down. Just like if you were sick you wouldn't chow down a pizza. You would start with soup etc. Give lots of water. There can be many reasons for blood in stool, vomiting, and diarrhea. Some as simple as ate something strange and has a irritated bowel/stomach. Other things can be parvo, coccidiosis, worms. I would not take the dog into the public until it resolves, just in case. If it's not better in a few days take in a stool sample to the vet. If the dogs acts sick, stops eating, has a temp( normal is 100-102.5) go into the vet ASAP.

Pexert, take caps lock off please, very hard to strain my old eyes to read your posts...

Also, it does not mean he has a hemeroid (sp?) just because he has blood in his stool. Doesn't mean he strained too hard, don't wait, bring him to the vet ASAP!!!!

I also withhold food for 24 hours if I see that my dog has the hershey squirts or is vomiting alot but not when there's blood, vet needs to know about this one!

Alot of times Coccidiosis or Giarrdia will present itself by blood in the stool. Vomiting sometimes occurs as well. I would withhold his regular food and give him either Cottage cheese (changes the PH in the intestine so the cocci can't live) -OR- Yogurt.

That is until you can get him into the Vet for a stool sample.

Blood can present from bright red to black, the color indicated at what point in the body it is coming from

Geez, just take your dog to the vet and let us know what he/she says.
Don't wait if there is blood in the stool.

danielleparks99, this is an old thread and I don't think the OP is around any longer but I will try to help you.

I would call your vet ASAP. Make sure he is getting plenty of water so he doesn't become dehydrated.

It sounds like he has coccidia or a bad case of worms. Parvo could also be a factor. Please take your baby in to the vet.
