I am going to be getting a dog this week or next. I just donít know if I should get a puppy or not and if I should rescue. I want to rescue a dog/ puppy, but I also want to show ( and the odds of me rescuing a purebred dog that I would want to show is slim to none) So I am really not sure what to do.
Oh yes, and I am going to a dog show this weekend, does anyone live in California?
If you want to show a dog, you almost *have* to buy a puppy. SO that you can be sure you'll get a good quality dog. In addition, virtually all dogs that are rescues are spayed/neutered before being adopted out. So that dog would not be eligible for showing anyway.
Depends on if you are looking to show conformation, obedience, or agility. The latter of the two, the dog needs to be AKC registered, but can be spayed/neutered...If conformation is your interest, than a puppy from a show breeder is the way to go. What breed are you looking to get?
The dog show you are going to will probably be a great place to make connections with quality breeders. It would be a good opportunity to see the dogs they produce and ask questions. Me, I'm a rescue kind of girl, but I have no interest in showing. Maybe one day I might like to participate in some kind of competition, maybe weight pull. But not anytime soon.
The other problem you'll come across at a shelter/rescue, is if you are going to enter the dog in shows, even just obedience, rally, etc. then you need to have its AKC registration papers and number, which most purebreds that end up in a shelter, dont have the papers with them
You can get a ILP number for a dog that appears to be pure. I adopted a Doberman from a shelter and got her a number so that I could compete in obedience! So if the dog appears to be pure you can get registration, but not for conformation.
