I am very worried about my puppy. She is 9 1/2 weeks old and I have have her for 10 days. I am not having a problem with her peeing in the house but pooping is a different story. We get up a 6 and go out. We come back in and eat breakfast. I take up the food and water after 20 minutes. About 30 minutes after eating we go back outside. She will pee but no poop. 45 minutes later back outside - still no poop? Another hour - no poo? How long should it take? Usually for her it's around 3 hours, but not outside- in the house. Is this normal? She is a 3 llbs yorkshire terrier. Please help me. I hate to keep her on lock down, but her unpredictable pooping makes me afraid for my carpet. Thanks - ML
Ahhhh! I feel for ya. Thank goodness we are way out of the potty training stage.
Gotta ask some technical questions...
When she does go...you know "stinky" is the stool really firm looking? Is she eating an all hard kibble diet?
Usually for a small breed puppy they have to go a lot...I mean really OFTEN. Have you had her to the Vet? Did they do stool checks or anything? This may be a good sign that your feeding a great puppy food. Usually less "stinky" means that your pup is getting a lot nutritionally out of their food.
Sounds like you have a good idea about the time frame on the pottying, just schedule around that. I wouldn't worry to much yet --as long as she has normal bowel movements every day.
keep using th crate, and keep at it. 9 weeks is awful young. as for her poo schedule. I would not worry if she is going and it looks normal. her schedule is just not insync with yours. i would crate her for right now and let her out after b-fast and then crate her let her out every hour for five minutes. no poo crate again. till she goes and praise. i really wouldn't worry about the schedule right now. i would focus on gettingher just to go outside.
My 4 1/2 month pup has never pooped right afer she finished eating. She will pee and poop in the morning when I first aker her out. Then she comes in and has beakfast.
When I first got her at 8 weeks of age, I would take her out again right after breakfast, but she would do nothing. I don't bother taking her out immediately anymore beause I know she's not going to go until at least an hour or or as much as three hours later. Fortunately my pup is at the satge where she will let me know and sit and paw at the door, . I guess some dogs just don't go immediately after eating and you and I both have one of them :-)
I got an 8 week old puppy on the 6 and she has gone poop once outside and pee twice but the rest...INSIDE. lol. Since she's my b-day present I have to clean it up! eewww lol and she's getting teeth so she bites EVERYTHING hopefully it stops...IT REALLY HURTS AND STINKS! lol
Dachshund Luver, remember tht she's still a baby and you've only had her for two days :-) Potty training doesn't happen overnight. It would be nice if if it did :-)
Do you crate her a night? Even if you do, she's still too young to hold it through the night and she'll have to be let out two or three time perhaps. When she wakes up from a nap, the first thing you shoud do is take her out to go potty. You also need take her outside immeditely after she finishes eating.
Even playing with her can excite her and you should take her out after some play time. If you see her starting to sniff or just walk around, it means she needs to go, and if you catch her in the ct of peeing or pooping , pick her up right away and take her outside. Hopefully she won't have emptied her bladder and will finish outside. Make sure you rpraise her after she's gone outside You can even give her a small treat if you want, but be sure to make a big del of the fact that she went outside, so that she's knows it makes you happy.
Most important, be consistentIt's not a bad idea to take her out every hour in the beginning ... unless of course, she's napping. Don't wake her up to take her out, but do take her out when she wakes up. After a couple of days, you'll know how long she's able to hold it and you'll only have to take her out every two or three hours :-) It's different for every dog. It will happen, but it will take some time and patience. Good luck to you :-)
She actually does very well at night. She will pee before bed (10pm) and wake up around midnight. At midnight she will poop. Then she sleeps unitl 6 am and in the morning her crate is dry as a bone. I feed her flint river ranch puppy food, which is supposed to be very good ( it is quite expensive). I bought it over the internet. One problem is that she may have too much freendom in the house. She is just so cute. I am going to limit her out time some.
Six hours is pretty good at night. Does she sleep in a crate at night? I would defnitely limit her dpace during the day. I would get a safety gate if you don't already have one and limit the space she can have in the house during the day.
If you prefer not to crate her, you can also put her on a leash and tether her to you. That way she's ALWAYS with you and you'll be more likely to catch her before or during the poop. I would still recommend limiting her freedom in the house until she's a little more reliable, and crate her whenever you can't give her all of your attention. I know it's hard to crate them when they're so little and cute, but it does make life so much easier on EVERYONE, puppy included!
My dog never poops right after a meal either. You'll hear a lot that they have to pee and poop 20 minutes after a meal..some do and some don't. Just keep track of when she's going (even the accidents inside) and you'll start to get a feel for HER personal schedule.
