Ho wmuch time in the crate is too much. We are having house breaking problems so my Yorkie has been spending more time in the crate. About 5 hours during the day, then from 9pm to 6 am? Is this too much? This is my first puppy and I feel so lost!
The crate is like the puppies den, a safety place. You may not notice so much now but as your puppy grows he or she will feel right at home in the crate. I think if you can find a way to come home on a lunch break that would be ideal, but if you can't leave a SAFE toy in there with the puppy. A kong is great and a packed bone NOT a raw hide or pig ear they can sometimes choke. I put a packed bone the ones that are literally a bone and repack it with canned dog food and then freeze it. It relieves anxiety and keeps them from getting bored. Last, I would say that as long as your puppy gets walked everyday and played with or a short training it should be fine. A tired dog is a happy dog! Hope this helps!
9pm to 6 am is kinda long for a puppy, I believe you said she was 9 weeks in another post?
Get up one last time around 1:30 to let her out.
My dog holds it from about 12 til 6 and she is 13 weeks. When we are up during the day she goes out about every hour, hour and a half.
As far as punishing her when she has an accident and you put her in the crate....5 minutes is 5 hours to a dog so you do not really need to go overboard.
Do not feel lost. Everyone has to have a FIRST pet. You will learn as you go. It's good that you are asking questions. Alot of people just can't handle it and get rid of the dog and that is why we have such a problem with shelter abandonment dogs.
Hang in there unfortunately "puppy time" doesn't last very long :(. Make it fun and treasure it while you can!

Well, my puppy goes to work with me. SHe is in and out of the crate all day. She goes potty every hour or so, except during her afternoon nap which usually last s from 12;30 to 3. At night I cut off all water at 7 and bedtime is between 9-10 pm. She will wake up around 12 am, go pee and poop and then sleep until 6am. She spends more time in the crate during the weekend because she is very hyper and I have to do house work. But usually only an hour at a time and then we go outside or play inside for a couple hours. She is very busy and hard to keep and eye on. She will sneak of to pee in a minute, even if sh'e just been out. This is my first dog and I am beginning to feel like I've made a $1000.00 mistake. I love my puppy, but this is alot of work.
puppies are alot of work, you are right. my bf says our puppy was more work than his newborn was 11 yrs ago. but the rewrds are more thn worth it. people dont realize they are getting an infant on 4 legs. that little being depends on you for everything...food, water, pay, encouragement, grooming, health, love, attention, behavior guidance...they become what we shape them into.
