all 3 of my dogs eat cat poop and no matter what I try they wont stop WHY WHY WHY HELP THIS IS GROSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Dogs eat poop because they aren't getting enough nutrition. I'm not sure about eating cat poop though.

You could start by keeping kitty litter box in a room yhat the dog can't access.

On another matter, please put periods and spaces periods at the end of your sentences instead of running eeverything together. It will be much easier for others to read and comment :-)

My dog eats kitty poo when she has access to it...we just keep the door open enough for the cats to get in and use the litter box and the dog can't go in so she doesn't eat it.

I had a dog that was getting into the cat box and eating the poop. It was disturbing. The vet told me that it was because there was a vitamin deficiency. Ask your vet about this problem. I think there is also something that you can put in the cat box to discourage this behavior.

you may want to look into a CleverCat litter box-- they sell em at Petsmart for about 30 bucks-- expensive i know but they guarantee them and they say they are kid and dog proof. Interesting design-- not normal. Most cats can adjust to the new clevercat very fast too. It also eliminates kicked out litter! Its a godsend in our house! our kitten used to like to see how much litter he could kick out when he would play in our old conventional hooded litter box.

I'm sorry, to all of those who said that eating cat poop may have something to do with a vitamin deficiency, that may be the case some of the time but that is NOT why my dogs do it.

With all of the high quality food being produced, and my pets vet visits this is simply not so.

I think pretty much all dogs have a weird fetish for cat poop.

I can't tell you why for sure. (I don't think anyone really knows the REAL answer) but cat poop is a delicacy to them. It has been said that is because they are bored or because it is a learned behavior and it is high in protein. When a cat eats their food, it is not all digusted properly so the smell atracts the dog and they are simply finishing the meal. Or maybe it just smells and tastes good to them. Who knows.

I don't know about you but my dog absolutely loooooves cat food too so that cat food explaination sounds like a pretty good one.

I keep my kitty liter in a large closet that we do not use too often the cat opens the door when he needs to use it. I close it when I see it open, I also have a covered kitty litter box with a high lip on the bottom.

Scooping the poop out quick will also lower the chance of catching your dog with a nose full of kitty liter munchin down.

It's a pain, It's gross, but it is perfectly normal.

As far as "putting something in the liter to discourage this behavior" be careful I do not think there is anything that you could put in there that would get the dog to stop and at the same time, keep the cat using the litter. Cats are very picky if you start messing around with the litter like mentioned a couple of posts above...your cat may find a new liter to use. Namely your entire house.

Thank you i totaly agree with the cat food thing my dogs prefer cat food over dog food anyday and I think the poop keeps the smell and so they think yummy cat food,I have 3 cats so its tough keeping up with it right away but i have to admit usualy if the dogs get there before me theres nothing to clean!!!!LOL I dont have anywhere to put the cat box out of reach b/c my one cat is so fat since getting fixed she cant jump well and gets stuck in small placesshe's called the pilsberry dough cat LOL

I know what you mean about your cat being a chunker my cat has gotten huge since he was neutered..He is not only fat he is really tall and thick.

My fiance has a black fat Pug that thinks of cat poo as a really special treat! My own 2 dogs never think of it, so I think it depends on the dog! We have forbid the dogs from going in the basement, and as soon as Poppy {the cat poo consumer} learned that, no problums since then!!

I always say " cat poop is to dogs as truffles are to humans" : delicacies!

I often encounter owners who drop off their dogs at the kennel I work at with special treats for them (ie cooked chicken chunks, green peppers, snausages, etc...) and I keep telling my boyfriend that when we bring Jesse to the kennel when we go on holidays for xmas, we're going to put some kitty poop in a baggie for "special treats" at the kennel...LOL j/k by the way... :P

Well dogs are scavengers as well as predators. They eat the cat poop becuase of its high protine content. It also tends to be fishy and for them, taste good. Easy meal, they are opertunists.

Some eat dog poop some dog. Many enjoy horse and cattle turds when given the oppertunity.

They do it because they are dogs. They do not have social morals against fecal matter. Food is food, digested already or not and if it smells good and atastes god thent hey are going to try to eat it well fed or not.

Cider has never had the opportunity to try cat poop, but is all over horse dung. Fresh is good, but when I kicked her out of the riding ring she tried to eat dried..

Then moved on to rolling in it..

Also found rabbit poop in the winter and tried to get as much in her mouth as possible while trying to run from me so I couldn't take it away.

i have those clevercat litter boxes and they work pretty well. but my one dog still gets in them, so i have the litter boxes in the basement and don't let the dogs down there.

mocha the pug can't get in those litter boxes, pearl isn't interested in cat poop, but snickers can still stick her head in and feast.
