I saw an episode of animal cops (i think) and I was completely torn on the subject.
This little old lady lived in a trailer and has a bazillion dogs and cats... the house was an absolute pit...pee & poo everywhere but this little old lady loved her pets. The animal cops ended up taking them all except 2 small dogs.
I felt bad because I think most of those animals will be pts... but her living conditions were so horrid and dirty and I'm sure none of those pets saw a vet... but she did love them and tried to save them and give them food and a home (dirrrttty) to call their own. I think she just took in strays over the years and ended up with waaaay to many pets.
I just felt bad for the little old lady... she was visably shaken.
'collectors' are just kind of sad all around. Most of the time they seem to start with godo intentions, they rescue an animal off the street. But then they dont have enough money to pay for proper veterinary care, an and food, and cleaning up, and it just snowballs when these unaltered animals breed and breed and breed.
Those are never fun, anymore then the houses full of feral cats, however we have to think sanatation and public safety. Disgusting situations like that breed disease. Sanation is one reason we don't have plagues and outbreaks like we used to. Look how quickly lice can travel through a class room.
So its sad, but its a situation where we have to look beyond.
I saw that one! I felt bad for her too, but the conditions for her and the kitties/dogs were not good YUCK! I think maybe it would be easier for her not to have to worry about food and such plus did you see that one cat that was found in the closet? It was almost dead. It is a hard call, because yes some will be pts because they are too wild... I think her heart was in the right place, but couldn't help them how they needed it.
There was one on Houston Animal Cops, this old lady had 2 labs and a cat. The lab had a bite that had gotten infected and she was so afraid they were taking her dog from her (I was praying this wasn't so). They finally convinced her to let them take him he had fleas like you wouldn't believe. If they haden't come and gotten the dog it wouldn't have made it. Besides they did the stuff for free bought her food for her animals and even taught her how to administer the flea treatment on the back of the neck. THAT was a happy ending. Helped the old woman who obviously loved her dogs get educated and even helped with the expenses of some things. Taking the dogs away in that situation would have been awful those animals were all she had she had good intentions they just helped her go that much further.
That dogs tail wagging when he saw her almost got me going, and seeing that old lady so happy and greatful....

That was a hard episode to see but "collectors" have issues...most of the time they are mental issues where they just really don't see the harm in the number of animals they have. It is sad...but none of those animals were cared for correctly and needed to get out of there. And besides that...that woman LIVED in there! It is safer for her for them to be gone as well. I don't doubt that she'll end up with more animals at some point. You can love and love your animals but not care for them one bit....
And about the 300 cats in the house...ick! It is horrid to think of the cats living with that many let alone the people in there with them. How unhealthy!!
i work with one of these animal collector type people. i tried non chalantly one day to bring it up to the animal control guy when he was in our office. unfortunately he had quite a different opinion on her. she reeks of cat pee, has told many stories of how many things in her home have been destroyed by the 80 cats she lives with, including a rusted out stove that had been peed on one too many times. but the animal control guy kept gushing about how she has this outdoor kitty pen built with trees in it and stuff and how great it was. i could go on and elaborate on this situation but if animal control doesnt care and keeps sending cats to her instead of euthanizing them then there sint much i can do.
