I have a golden, pup, 6-7 months...well behaved, calm(surprising to some but he is very calm), trains well...thinking of getting a playmate for him and a new doggy for our family. We are not looking at sporting breeds as much now. Our golden is so calm we are not sure we could handle the energy level of a lab for instance. We are thinking, of more working dogs. Rottweillers, Saint Bernard, or a Pitt. Any thoughts?
Good for you! I just adopted a 2 year old goldendoodle for our home and my 10 mo. golden retriever. It is going pretty well, a few disputes here and there but she has only beed here for a week. They are similiar in temperment and I think this is why it works. You might want to think about a breed that like playing fetch or likes water that way they can play together and you can do similiar things with them. Good luck to you and let us know what you get!!!! It is exciting!
my suggestion is a laid back dog since the pup is mellow. Large dogs like danes and saint benards are mellow...especially afet the awkward stage...I say look at different kinds and match personalities...good luck
My girlfriend wanted a unique combo...lazy/mellow but also protective. Not "bite people" protective just "bark at the door" protective. Sanders(Golden) barks occasionally at the door, we are just getting him to bark to signal to go out. He just doesn't bark...he will grumble, and "talk" but not bark much at all.
We just ran across a Basset/spaniel mix that needs a good home so we are thinking of checking it out.
As far as a similar breed, i.e. golden or lab or other "water dog" retriever type...at this point we don't want to take our chances with getting a "worker" that wants to retrieve all day. I take Sanders to the river and retrieve and hike once a week, but my girlfriend isn't into that...so another retriever would mean double duty for daddy! Plus, the unique thing about Sanders is he retreives like crazy at the river and loves the hike(3+ miles) but at home he is usually very mellow. He does want to play ball a bit in the house lately because its 90 degrees out so we can't do our usual walk and extended play, but other then that hes mellow.
