I live in the city limits, but there are over a dozen deer that also live here. They eat the gardens, flowers, graze right outside the windows. They are used to people and even though they destroy so much, we all look out for them.
Last night, my Mom and I were coming home from the store and there were a group of people standing in the road, next to her house. One of the twin fawns was laying on the side of the road, struggling to get up.
Some idiot hit the baby and didn't even stop. We've been watching the twins since birth, as mama had them in our field, under the apple tree.
Well, she was injured beyond repair, her back legs didn't work. Our neighbor called public safety and they came out and shot her. Trouble is, it took 2 shots to kill the poor baby.
Just thought I'd share our neighborhood loss, it bothered me all night.
I'm so sorry to hear that....you know there was a cop in my area that saw a deer take a plunge 30 feet off a bridge onto a road, the deer's two rear legs were broke so he decided to shoot the deer well it didn't die so he then tried to run over it's neck with his car, still didn't die he then tried to strangle the deer, still didn't die. The police officer has now been suspended pending an investigation into animal cruelty. He should have just shot the poor thing again but instead I think caused it more suffering.
Oh no! How sad! Poor baby! Obviously the cop had never shot his gun before. He should get suspended until he learns how to shoot properly! Ughhhhhhh! There is no excuse for him to shoot the poor baby twice! Just curious.....do ya'll have a wildlife rescue group where you live?
No, there's not a wildlife rescue group around here. There is a lady that rehabilitates wild birds, mostly birds of prey.
She has successfully rehabilitated eagles and hawks, owls and many other birds, but she doesn't work with mammels.
Only other alternative is the zoo at Wallace. They are the ones that pick up the dead dear from the highways and use them for their wild animals food. I hope that's not the fate of the little fawn. I drove by there about 1/2 hour later and the body was gone, guess they took him with?
Shooting deer, during hunting season doesn't really bother me, but to see the poor baby suffer like that really broke my heart. She/he was struggling to stand and it would tear your heart out to watch it.
Anyway thanks for listening, it's just a deer, but I'm sure the mom and the other twin are missing it.
sorry basset that you had to witness all of that...i have had the unfortunate time to be hit not once...but twice by deer...uncanny part...it was 6 days apart...i dide stop...couldnt find first one..processed the second...2 years ago a deer was hit by on comming traffic and flung into us...did horrable damage to our truck...trooper said she never saw a deer look like that when hit...was not a good sight...i see deer all the time...have fed crippled ones for 3 years till she never came any more...but she had fawns all 3 years...and they let us watch them really close...i worried so much during hunting season for limpy (as i called her) we have seen many escape from getting hit...sadly not all do...i hope you feel better today basset
