I have a 7 month old border collie. Today when I brought him hiking, a bull mastiff came up to him. They both started playing and the mastiff got a lil aggressive, but didn't overdo it. After 3 mins. another dog came in and started attacking my dog, when the mastiff saw this he astarted attacking my dog. Than 3 other dogs ran in and started snapping at my dog. My dog was crying and I had to pick him up. Do dogs find the courage attacking other dogs when they are in packs? Any tips on how to prevent this. My dog almost never starts playing with a dog, until they come to him first. He seems kind of tramatized right now.

i think this is pack mentality...the others came in to attack the under dog...and in your case...your pooch...im sorry it happened to yours...but it does happen in times when several dogs are allowed to be in with another..I have mini schnauzers and shepherds..I have had times when the schnauzers gang up on a shepherd...and times 2 or more shepherds try it too...I dont let it go on long..I cant...could cost a pet its life...i would suggest limiting off leash free play time such as this..It can be dangerious..as you have found out..
I was thinking the same thing, why are all these dogs running freely? Is this some type of dog park? If so, the owners should have all been there keeping their dogs under control. Sorry your dog got hurt. I hope you won't take it there anymore because that doesn't sound like a good place at all.
That's terrible! I really hope your dog didn't get seriously hurt in the process or mentally traumatized. But yeah, I'm also curious where all of these dogs are coming from. You said you were hiking right? A hiking trail should not have dogs running around rampantly. Even if it was a dog park, the owners should have still been near there dogs. I'd understand if it was one dog who ran over and had irresponsible owners who didn't bother to look... but you're describing a bunch of different dogs.
Sorry about youtr puppy. I hope hes ok. Yeah dogs do tend to gang up on other dogs when you get a group of them together. My sister had a spitz and 2 rotts that would get along fine until Sweet Pea got in with them. Then Pea and the 2 rotts would gang up on the spitz. If the spitz wasnt there than Pea and one of the rotts would jump the other rott.
