I have a few questions/concerns. I noticed today while brushing my miniature schnauzer, Rilo, that the hair on his left front leg is very short. Much shorter than the other leg. I have noticed him nipping that leg as if he has an itch but it was only today that I noticed the hair difference. I checked to see if there was anything visible that would make him itch or bite his hair but the only thing I found was a tiny little scab, much like a few others I have found on his back but I assumed to be bug bites. He has frontline applied and short hair so I haven't seen any signs of fleas. What could this be? Should I be worried??
My other questions deals with his beard. He is a black and silver and his beard is slowly starting to turn a yellowish color around the mouth. Any ideas on how to prevent this? His beard gets rinsed often, especially when he has food in it and fully washed at least twice a week (due to him digging in the mud) How can I help keep his beard more white?
We have a vet appointment Friday morning to have it checked out. They said it could be as simple as a bug bite or an allergic reaction to something, so it wouldn't hurt to bring him in to check. I hope for his sake it isn't something like allergies, poor little guy! He seems completely ok and the same old happy go lucky little boy otherwise. I'll let you know what they say Friday.
He is on Wellness Super5Mix Puppy. He has never licked his feet, had loose stools (except the first day home), etc. The only thing I have noticed prior to the hair on his leg was a few little scabs here or there on his back. Hopefully the vet can let me know what is up and we'll go from there.
Mandy does the same thing. She scratches and bites her front legs till she whines. Allergy shots do not help. I have tried EVERYTHING. I have bought the most expensive shampoos only for her to be blowed dry and start nipping at her legs again. We really believe she is allergic to grass and possibly other things in the yard. She only goes out long enough to tee-tee, but its long enough to get her started. So I just brush her, spray her with an anti-itch med. I get from Foster & Smith. and give her Benedryl. How old is your schnuzer? The discoloration (if its a puppy) may fade in time. One of mine almost looked like it had rust around her mouth. I would trim it with the scissors and today she has no discoloration at all.
It really just sounds like perhaps pustles, or hives/seasonal allergies. The food will not be a factor. The beard unfortunetly will turn brownish from the dogs body fluids. Just like some dogs get the brown staining under their eyes, same thing. There isn't much you can do except wash his beard occasionally, or clip it all off and start again but it would just go brown again.
