I won't be getting my dober boy for 8 months, but I want to be really prepared to start his training as soon as I get him, so I would really appreciate any suggestions as to the best & most successful training books and DVDs. I would prefer Doberman specific ones though, since obviously dobes are different then other dogs and don't always train the same way.
Other than basic obedience, I would like to target off leash training in various situations because I'll be traveling a lot with him & I'll also be bringing him out trail riding with me. Thanks
CONGRATS on your Dober baby:) One make sure you socialize socialize SOCIALIZE!! 2 make sure the puppy get the complete rules of sevens before it is 7 weeks old. Most good breeders do that. first 16 weeks are CRITICAL on exposure to strangers and situations. Dobermans are incredibly smart most American dogs (including mine own) I have seen are food drive so treats and praise. Training the recall is easy But start with a good foundation and NEVER NEVER correct the puppy when it comes to you NO Matter what. IT comes you praise and treat and rub down YOU sure the best thing in the world always !! And it will come later they do go through stubborn periods and you will have to correct them for not coming. Best article I have seen on this is at leerburg link is on my site . Training the recall. also read though all the training sites and socialization stuff on my site its all there for you and free so use it. Remember German Shepherd Dogs are MUCH different then Dobermans. Dobermans NEED to be OVERLY socialized they are by nature a VERY suspicious of strangers and Are breed to be that way. Leerburg has many good videos also on training But Most are geared for GSDs and they DONT want theirs socialized or apparently they wont protect from what I gather reading through his site and others. Congradulation on the up coming addition to your house. I agree with JKK on most points. Also, he ain't joking about stubborn periods. Just before Taz turned 2, he was constantly challenging my athority for about 2-3 months. And remember that the best way to have a dobe that listens is to show it affection at least a few times a day.
I have a 14 month alfa female who is extreamly protective of my wife when I am not home. I started playing with her laying on the floor rubbing her belly from the time she was 8 weeks old and eventually got her to roll on her back showing me her stomach to rub. I have never forced myself on her but kept it fun and play as well as a professional trainer and endless socalization. I started taking her to dog shows to expose her to many other dogs as well as humans.
Although her back does go up and she becomes alert when a stanger comes around we always make her great the stranger and let them pet her and she is ok.
Remember spend as much time playing and socializing him, the younger you start the better.
