We just brought home our 9 week old tea cup chihuahua yesterday and we live in an aprtment. He is going to have to be a paper user forever because bringing a puppy that small in and out of an aprtment is much to difficult and his breeder recommended it over bringing him out on a leash every two hours...my question is when he does make a pee pee on the carpet (which is only dime size amount) and not his papers how do i reinforce that he needs to go on the paper next time???
It's easier if you catch him in the act of peeing, as if you find out after the fact, there's not much much you can do. Pick him up imediately . Hopefully he hasn't emptied his little bladder and take him to the paper where you want him to go potty. Whatever you do, DO NOT rub his little nose in it. It is cruel and accomplishes nothing, not to mention the dog will have no idea why you're doing it, Do you keep him in a crate? Have you tried puppy pads? I've read some posts where peole had great success with them.
I agree with not being too forceful with the puppy. My dad wanted to use that method when we had our Rottweiler, luckily she was great and didn't require too much in the training department. I'm also looking for a chihuahua and paper training is something I'd like to do also. We'll be in an apt and I just think it'll be easier for all of us.
I have 5 dogs. 2 of mine use the paper. 4lb poms. Simple Solution has some puppy pads called Jump Start. It comes with instructions, a hot line to help you out. They work really well. Mine started paper training in April when I got them. One was 4 yrs old and the other was a year. And it has only been a few months and the male is paper trained. The female is 98 % done. They were never paper trained before. I used a crate when we were gone and then came home and put them on the paper and said "potty on paper" It has worked. When my little female seems like she is looking to potty some where else beside the pad. I just say "go potty on the paper" and she turns around and goes to the paper. We clap out hands and make happy when they potty and run to the kitchen for a treat. Now when they potty they head straight to the kitchen for their treat jumping up and down because they did good.
Also even though it is just a spot on the carpet. I use natures Mircle to clean up any pee or pooh that may have happened so the smell isn't there any longer. Hope this helps some.
