i use the royal canin veterinary diet S/O because my one cat has urinary blockage problems. he has been on that food only for 1 year now and knock on wood has been symptom free so i am very impressed with it. i do not know anything baout their regular diets though
We have used Royal Canin Small Breed Puppy alot! It is awesome for any lactating Mommies...really does the job keeping up with the terrific drain on them during nursing. Also give that to our adult Chihuahua. She's a really active little gal so we don't have to worry about weight gain - She also really likes the size of the pieces.
I have also tried a sample of the Royal Canin Baby Dog...wasn't that much different than the Small Breed Puppy. Pieces were a little smaller and instead of oval they were triangle. As far as I have seen puppies seem to take off just as fast on either kind.
I haven't tried any of their other food. I know they offer a lot of 'Breed Specific' food which may or may not live up to expectations.
I like it and would recommend it where available. Best of luck!

Wow hadn't heard that Bugsy! Makes sense though. I think that Royal Canin and Eukanuba run fairly close as far as ingredients. They are both great foods but will not work for some dogs. I think the manufacturers were trying to come up with a high quality food with less corn or other such fillers...unfortunately they succeded in making it rather unbalanced unless the dog in question has excessive nutritional drains (i.e. a nursing bitch or a top working/show dog). Feeding a high Protein/Fat dog food can cause all sorts of problems including digestive upsets and obesity. I suppose that is why there are so many differnt types of dog food to choose from. No one food will work for every dog :-)
I sure don't know when I peed in your Cheerios Mafia, but I swear that you always have something to say after one of my posts that feels kinda like your sticking your finger in my eye...
I just threw Eukanuba out there as an example...and I didn't want to offend anyone who feeds it and has great results. I would not consider it a below mid-grade food and I have heard a lot of arguements about dog food...In the end it is how well the dog does on the food it's being fed. Something that is discussed with one's Vet when he/she evaluates your pets' overall health.
I haven't mentioned anything up until this point...guess I am just overly irritable tonight.
Sorry I didn't have anything relevent to add to your last post Bugsy ;-)
PuPzRuS if you offer bad advice, you have no right to get your panties in a twist. Wanna say that mediocre food is great, then usually multiple people will disagree.. same with any advice that is mediocre, dangerous, or anything that any one else can usefully add.
Top 3 Eukanuba ingredients... Low quality food.. but better than alpo or old roy
I don't think I offered any *BAD* advice anywhere...I should have worded my post differently. Should have used the word 'fine' instead of great. I don't feed Eukanuba and don't intend to. I have fed Royal Canin and have had excellent results, once again, that is my opinion based on the results I personally experienced.
If you ask 100 different Vets in the US which food they would recommend you would likely get 50 different types. You are right, in the end it is what you can afford and what your pets do the best on...

I've seen too many X food is amazing posts when in reality X food is pretty poor quality.
It's like someone saying their dog does amazing on alpo. Umm okay.. but have you tried other foods? No? Then don't say the dog is doing amazing cause living isn't necessarily the only criteria to good food, lol.
No, it is totally what you can afford, and what a dog does well on at the same time.
I found eagle pack holistic was evil.. 20 pound dog with dane sized poop.. but it is a top food. Or I've heard dead fish smelling farts on E.P.H. too... Ewww.
There's midgrade stuff that is better than crap food.. it's all the ingredients list. Like brown rice is fine.. other ice forms aren't so nutritious..
This is a good site.. shows top 3 ingredients for a bunch of foods, and numbers 1,2,3 for top 3 quality foods by ingredient.. but can quickly compare for anyone curious about brand a vs b, etc.
Sorry you are having a rough night. I try really Really REALLY hard not to offend anybody, and yet somehow I still end up doing it occasionally. That was a really good site. There was one food in particular that I wanted to find but couldn't. ProPac. I fed that for a while...didn't notice many good things about it though. Ohhhhh, and we had TERRIBLE troubles with Nutro Max...the puppy AND the adult. Oh my goodness! Nothing grosser than Red Food making Red poop. Ick. Freaked me out everytime the baies would go #2.
