yes, they say that each dogs coat serves them as needed in different ways. People tend to want to shave their collies and such down because they think they are too hot, in reality, the under coat is a thermal type jacket for them and aids in keeping them cool.
Double coated breeds generally will never grow back right, or at least the same as they started..
Like a pom, the coat may be ruined forever..
Better to strip the undercoat some by brushing.
The undercoat grows back faster than the overcoat. On other dogs, the coat may never be perfect, but if not you wouldn't care witha pet. Like cutting your hair short and lettign it grow back.. may change a tiny bit.
Well, I shave my Saint Bernard in the summer. When her coat grows back it is lovely. She is much much cooler & happier. I can tell because she stops lying by the air conditioner & will actually stay outside for longer than 10 minutes.
i have 2 american eskimos, adn they are also double coated. they are never to be shaved.i groomed out the undercoat, adn they are a/c brats now. if they are outside, they are in the pool or lake. otherwise, they are in front of the a/c.
I have a Corgi and she's double coated so I've heard many different sources which say "DON'T SHAVE!" One is that their undercoat actually keeps the heat out, and the other reason is that if you shave them, instances of them getting sunburns or other skin problems might arise.
I just walk my pup in the morning when it's still cool and at dusk when the sun's not blaring down. During the day, she romps around in the cool AC-ed house or sleeps on the cool kitchen floor. If you need to keep your dog outside, make sure to provide a little kiddie pool with ice cubes, and make sure the area has alot of shade! And never leave dogs outside in the summer for too long.. that's just cruel!
I have two mix breed sisters here, half black lab, and their mother was half shepherd half husky.
So they have thick black hair, and right now they are shedding something fierce! My son wants to just shave them. They are inside dogs, only going for walks in our back yard several times a day so I wouldn't worry about sunburn.
But... after reading all these posts, will their hair grow back normally? I don't think they have a double coat. And yes I do brush but it's a hopeless battle here. I can brush and brush, looks like road kill out in the yard when I'm done. And still the next morning you can stuff a pillow with all the fur on the floor. A summer buzz would be nice!
