My great dane is still ill and I am getting her back to the vet but I want to be armed with info on distemper so that I can get him to test for it. I have heard that the symptoms my dog has are similar to a couple of people who said their dogs had it. There's a vet out in CA who has a serum that works to kill the virus and basically cure the dog and he will send it to the vets or owners. I need more info.
I'd be suspicious of anyone who claims to have a cure-all serum against active distemper in a dog. From everything I know about distemper and vet care, there is no cure, just treatment options, and they are not very effective unfortunately. Distemper has an extremely high mortality rate, I've heard as high as 75 to 80%. It's a must as far as vaccinations go. If someone claims to have a cure for distemper, why hasn't the medical community even heard of it? Be wary, and if this guy claims ot have a cure, make sure you get it in writing with a carefully read guarantee, otherwise he might be just some quack out to rip people off.
In an earlier post I think I remember you saying that your Dane was 10. Not to sound grim but the life expectancy of a Dane is between 8 and 10 years. At its this stage in your dogs life it may be showing it age. I still hope you don't lose him anytime soon.
The vet said last week that other than this Giardia virus our dane was in good health for 9yrs old. He gave antibiotics and said we'd see change in a couple of days...NOT SO! I have been in contact with a lady in CA whose dog had distemper and got the serum from the vet in CA. She has a happy, healthy dog 3 yrs later. I emailed her and told her all the symptoms that my dane has and she said they are identical to what her dog had. The reason for this guy not getting his serum patented is that he actually made a mistake in it but that mistake is what cures the dog. He didn't want to go thru all the political hoopla of getting funding for his patent, etc. You can read more about it here: http://www.geocities.com/avpets/bearsstory.html http://www.edbond.com/distemper.html At this point, I am going to have her tested for it and then depending on how progressed it is, we just might contact this guy in CA.
thanks everyone for your advice and kind words. unfortunately, Jasmyn, my dane had to be put down on Tuesday. The vet said that if the antibiotics didn't work then we were looking at an internal organ problem and would cost thousands of dollars and may or may not bring her out of it. He said that he understood how hard it was for us to let her go but she wouldn't be suffering anymore if we did. Goodbye Jasmyn, we'll miss you dearly.
