I really want a dog, but I am not sure how to tell a good breeder from a bad breeder. I look online, and all the websites look great. But how do I know if the breeder is caring, and isnt' a puppy mill?? They all look the same to me!
That is the problem with internet breeders. You never know who is behind the facade. You better stick to some one local that you can personally talk to and see their dogs and pups in person. You are much less likely to get ripped off, and much less likely to get a mill dog.
Stay clear of online stuff, like these sites. Get names from the AKC and national breed clubs and if those folks have websites then sure, check them out.
In looking for a responsible breeder off-line, one... - is eager to share detailed breed information - believes there are no "stupid" questions - grabs every opportunity to educate - explains total breed care - supplies shot records, pedigrees, care information - explains genetic defects in the breed - is willing to let you see the sire and dam - is willing to let you see the other dogs on the property as well - is willing to let you see the kennels and the surrounding area of the kennels - questions the buyers ability to care for the dog - offers guarantees - talks about training and development - cares about each and every pup - maintains sanitary, clean quarters for the dogs - tests all breeding stock
AND LASTLY, a reputable breeder stays in contunial contact and communication with the purchaser.

A big thing is that they shuld be asking you as many, if not more questions than you are asking them. And they shouldn't all be about shipping or what they are getting paid but about how your lifestyle will fit the dog and really trying to find out if this is the right home for the pup.
Just read your were looking for a mixed breed so call a rescue or shelter and they will drill you more than most breeders:) If you find one at a pound they will probally just hand it over to you but in that situation its ok. Good luck!

also look back several pages at past posts, we did this subject to death, probably before you joined. If its a mix your looking for go to a shelter, etc. There are no reputable breeders of mixed breeds (as said before oxymoron)
