my dog developed OCD!!!!!

i have two bostons that are two weeks apart and with the same father but one has now developed OCD cause i used a stupid laser light to entertain them and play with them for exercise and now my poor max is suffering from this.

he is going to a dog behaviourist tomorrow and she said she will most likely have to put him on meds for the rest of his life and that it is a very hard and difficult thing to treat!

so pleeeease people beware! DO NOT USE LASERS FOR YOUR DOG!!! some are just predisposed to developing this while others are not cause his sister molly does not nor did not develope this only max did.

the vet said that if it had not been with the laser that something else along the way would of triggered it for him and i know it did not happen right away but it was about two months or so after using the laser that this progressively got worse.

he spends his time from morning to night doing nothing but going in circles chasing either his foot, or mainly his own little shadow..

i turn off the lights in each room to keep from him doing this yet he manages to find anything that moves, twinkles or sparkles or anything and he will chase it nonstop..

he is in torment and i pray for him that meds will help him cause he cannot in noooo way live his life this way..

any input greatly appreciated!

Is OCD like when they chase their tail & if you don't stop them they will keep on continueally doing it & never stop?

I read this in a book before, & it means that if you don't stop them from chasing their tail or other habits like that they will keep doing it & it will get worse & worse. Some dogs with OCD bark at at nothing & attack inanimate objects.

i am sorry i assumed everyone new what OCD is. it is obsessive compulsive disorder and you can look it up on the net for people and it is the same as for dogs, etc..

it is not curable but it is treatable but it is difficult to treat and meds and behaviour modification is needed to break them of this cycle.

they constantly repeat doing the same thing over and over like people who compulsively wash their hands and cannot stop themselves even though they may want to, their brain gets wired wrong and they cannot control it and have no control over it what so ever..

tomorrow he will go to the behaviourist and i will find out what she plans on doing to help my poor little guy...for now i have to tell him nicely and gently to stop and distract him away from himself and it is so difficult cause as soon as i distract him for a second he is right back doing it again.

he plays sometimes with his sister and that is good cause then he is not chasing things, but it is so sad to see him stuck in this awful cycle!

I use a laser for one of my dogs and he loves it! He's not OCD either....

If you continue to use it your dog can come down with OCD..

That is SOOO sad! I would hate my self if it happened to one of my animals! I hope the meds help.

They had an episode of a dog with this problem on the Dog Whisperer.

There was actraully two one was with the dog just like yours of going after the laser light or shadows I think it was a golden or something like that. The other was a german shepherd that would chase his tail for hours he would even sneak off so he could do it.

Maybe you should see if you can find them and watch it. He got the dogs over the problems with no meds.

They are always showing reruns in fact that is all I can find of his shows.

You might be able to go to the Animal Planet web site and see if you can find out how to contact Ceaser.

....I know, OCD sucks.....though I didn't think dogs could get it.

Not all dogs are like that though. I know ppl say not to let your dog chase it's tail. None of my huskys ever caught OCD, and I used to make Blaze chase her tail. I've also used a laser pointer, and a flash light to fool around with the dogs.

But that's like chasing a ball, they can get OCD for just throwing a ball for them constantly.

It's just a roll of the dice when you have a animal. You never know what you'll end up with. Horrible attitude, wonderful attitude, cuteness, supreme adorableness, or if it's a mixed breed from the pound your really flippin the coin then. :D

mammamia some dogs are PRE-DISPOSITIONED to this and others are not!

my other boston is his half sister and she never got this way at all and she is two weeks younger, raised the same way, etc...but for some reason max was already pre-conditioned to develop this crappy thing to happen to him and though she said sooner or later he would of gotten it the laser just helped it come out sooner rather then later.

i seen that same episode of caesar and i searched high and low to find a way to get a hold of him and nada.

funny how dogs can get the same things as us humans!

bluhusky, the difference is that your dogs didnt/dont chase every little shadow that they see. max chasing his constantly, i mean round and round and round and round in CIRCLES ALLLLL DAAAAAY LONNNNNNNNNG!!!!!

i open the back door in the a.m. and the sun is in the back yard, and immediately he sees his shadow and before he is even getting a chance to go pee he is already in circles...

i take him to the lawn and he does this over and over and over again till i can distract him long enough to potty....then he comes in and round and round and round again all through the house where ever the sun is making a shadow cause the sun comes in the living room and kitchen and dining area in the morning, so half the day there are shadows all over our house and though i clsose shades and keep lights off for him there is still his own shadow on the floor that he can see and chases it nonstop....and or sometimes his foot, his back foot he willgo after..

we use to laugh thinking it was funny that he was just playing..then we started tripping over him and oh yeah he is constantly now sitting between our feet when we are standing somewhere, that is another weird thingy he has started doing too!

i just dont see him doing this once in a while, it has literally become a way of life for him! not just once in a while he sees his shadow or something glinting off the wall but anything and everything he chases it and tries so hard to catch it but mostly round and round and round and round in circles all day long and it is so sad to him so consumed by this....not fun for him at all as he seems totally controled by this and not seeming to be doing this on his own free will but controlled by it...that is the difference..

when throwing a ball back and fourht to your dog is not OCD!!! the dogs stops when you stop and that is all done for now...max does not stop chasing his shadow, molly chases the ball we throw it she brings it back we throw it, she would do this all day if we did it all day with her, but when we are done we are done and she finds other things to do...max doesnt this is all he does, all day long!

i put him in my lap alot to keep him off the floor or at times i've put him in his kennel so he can rest and not chase himself..it is just sad to see this nonstop behaviour...

The behavioralist will tell you of course to stop the lazer games, of course you did. The act it self has been very rewarding for him, its fun and you are reacting to the game by laughing and spending time with the dog. Youve taught him the game is fun, So now you need to leave the room when the dog chases things, do not verbally punish or reward the behavior in any way. Start teaching some other activities, like fetch and retreave.But if the dog goes into the chase mode, your to ignore and leave the room. The other activities like obediance and tricks must be re-enforced, over and over. Drugs may help the dog calm down and focus on you.
It doesn't necessarily mean he will do it the rest of his life, but it does mean hes predisposed to the behavior, its kind of like, once an alcoholic, always the alcoholic.
The good thing about your problem is it was learned, I don't think he has a mental disorder.
