Hi! I'm the very happy mum of 2 beautiful puppies. But I need some advice, comments or opinions... Star is a female mini-eskie/pug who is almost 8 months old. Ares is a male mini-eskie/pomeranian who is 8 weeks old. We introduced them to each other last night. Star still plays like a puppy but I think she's playing too rough with Ares. She is about 15 pounds heavier than Ares right now and is a high energy dog. Ares seemed to want to play, but when Star wouldn't leave him alone, or when she got on top of him, he would start to growl. (more like a puppy gurgle than a growl, I guess) Star is also pawing at him, puppy nibbling and chasing him around. Is this all normal? I am scared that Star is going to hurt Ares. Should I be? Star has a pug body - very solid - and Ares is a fragile puppy right now. Star is also a very playful puppy and it wouldn't be in her personality at this point to just ignore another creature in her living space. Is she going to learn that she can't be too rough with Ares? Anyone have some advice or comments for me? Should I just let them work it out? Is Star maybe going to hurt Ares intentionally or even unintentially? Our hopes are for them to become lifelong friends.
When I brought my small puppy home, I had another st. bernard puppy who was older and was about 40 pounds more then the puppy. I thought the St would hurt the puppy but he was just more carful then before. Dogs usually have a pretty good attitude when it comes to smaller animals
From the way you describe it, Ares is giving a "play with me" growl, one that is happy more than anything. And Star is acting in a totally normal way. She sounds like she's just enticing him to play with her. If it was a problem, Ares's growl would be deep and not "yippy", in other words, long and angry. If he's upset, he'll show it. It doesn't sound like there's a problem, though. They're probably just playing.
it sound like play to me, too. ares will be able to let star know, or may run to you for help. dogs usually know to be gentle with the littler one. they can make a lot of growling and barking noise playing, but it's just that, noise. that's very doglike. still, it's good to keep an eye on them.
Thanks everyone. Star and Ares played a little nicer last night. I took Star to doggie daycare yesterday so she was wiped by the time she got home to Ares. I'm still a little scared, but I think I'm more paranoid than I need to be. We have been trying to praise Star whenever she plays nicely with Ares. She has even picked up toys to bring over to him. But, she has taken things away from Ares too - whatever he chews she wants for herself. She also likes to bite his little ears. I hope she's not getting jealous. But all in all, I think everything will be okay. Thanks again.
