my daughter just bought a hamster two weeks ago then today she went to feed her hamster and found four babys we plan on keeping them but don,t know two much about them . if we keep the baby,s will we end up with more babys please help me please.
Do you just have the 1 female or do you also have the dad? If you have any other hamsters the mom and the babies need to be in a seperate cage. I don't really know if u will end up with more babies. I know it is bad to breed inside the family, the babies could end up handicap.
Also, the pet shop may be interested in buying the babies, once they are ready to go. They won't give you anywhere near what you paid for your hamster, but at least then you wouldn't have to worry about more babies.
Wonder what kind of pet shop you got your hamster at? Most of them usually keep the males and females in seperate cages or tanks.
My son used to raise baby rats and mice for the pet shop when he was younger. I think, at that time, they paid .50 cents per animal.
Don't handle the babies, it may be tempting to pick them up, since they look like little pink erasers, but hamsters are very finacky and tend to eat their little ones if they have any fear for their safety.
I believe you can wean the little ones at 21 days, if I remember right.
You can get books at the library on raising hamsters, that would give you a better idea of what you will be facing in the next few weeks.
If there are males in the litter they will breed with the mother and any other females there when they come of age. You should be able to tell which are the males and which are the females. Actually I would wait, I beleive they are weened at 4 or 5 weeks, then get rid of the males asap! If you bother the mother at this young age she may eat the young. Check the weening age(on the web), its been a long time sinse I had hamsters and babies.
thanks everyone it helped me out . and no i don,t have the male. i bought the hamster two weeks ago then today my daughter found those pink things . and there was a hamster in the same cage with the one we bought my hubby did say if any die it won,t go to waste we got a corn snake two lol
I love baby hamsters! They are the cutest things. A few things to know are...
1. Try not to put your scent on the babies. If you need to clean the cage or pick them up for any reason...use a plastic spoon (don't use metal, it's too cold).
2. Once the babies are eating on their own, you'll want to make sure you seperate the males ASAP, otherwise, the male(s) will mate with the Mom and any female(s) immediatley.
3. You may also need to seperate a male and another male..depending on how dominate they are trying to be.
Other than that...the mother takes care of the rest. She'll make sure they don't stray too far away from the "nest" and don't be alarmed if you see her picking them up with her teeth...she knows what she's doing ;o) It's also not uncommon if the Mom eats a baby...if the baby is sick and will not survive...you may end up with 1 less hamster baby.
I can't think of anything else right now...anytime we have ever had baby hamsters, we've always given them to the old Mom and Pop pet store up the road, but some stores will buy them from you...and IMO an even better store will only take one sex...not both. If they take both sexes..that shows to me that they don't care about the hamster population.
Good luck...this will be a great joy for you and your DD :o)
please don't go near the cage exept to give it food, also don't clean the cage out untile they are walking about. and what kind of hamster have you got? i got 2 russian dwarf hamsters from 2 differen't pet shops, they were sapost to be 2 females anyway a few weeks later they were 5 little babies. i took out the male i was about 9 at this time, and i sometimes checked on them ect well anywaythe muther killed 3 of the babies, by biting most of there little heads off (it was horrible) i did save 2 of them they were weaned by this time - but sadly they died when they were about 5 or 6 weeks.
thank you every one you helped me out alot. decided to keep the babies all four are alive and well. the hamster is a russian dwarf. already bought another cage. so i can seprate them my daughter wants me to tell you guys that her hamster is a single mom. the dad is still at the pet store.
