i got a free sample of purina dog chow from costco the other day so i thought i would give it a shot and both of my dogs love it!
not sure it is a good brand though cause it has ground yellow corn, poultry by-product meal, corn glutten meal, soybean meal, beef fallow preserves, etc...those are the first few though. any thoughts on this food?
I think if your dog likes it and it works well for there system then buy it. I have 3 dogs and I have to feed them 2 different types of food because 1 dog has a different system than the other dogs. (IAMS, Eukanuba)
I would try another brand. You have to be careful with a growing puppy. Hips forming........many breeds have problems if not fed a quality food as a pup. They have Iams a Wal-M now... I think it's pretty good.
Hi, I feed Iams and Diamond mixed. I can now get Iams at my local Walmart instead of going all the way to the pet store to get it.
I do have a question though: How is the brand Maxximum Nutrition that one can find at walmart? I have heard several breeders say they have started using that and that their vets said it is comparable to Science Diet.
I tried purina puppy chow years ago when I raised akitas for few months. BIG MISTAKE. None of the puppies’ ears got up when they should have. They started to go up for most at 4-6 months, when it normally should have been around 2-3 months, and 2 of them never had their ears fully up. I never had this problem before I fed Purina, and never had it after I stopped, so I am pretty sure it was the food fault. I never used them since. This was years ago, so maybe they changed the formula since, but I wouldn’t take that chance.
As long as the dogs like it, feed it, I personally like purina, but I dont use the chow, it is lower quality, we feed the Purina ONE and have wonderfull results. Most people here do not like the Purina products, but use your own judgement based on how the dog does on it
the purina dog chow is probably the l;owest of their dog food line. though i know of a breeder of border terriers who swears by this food and has dogs that have lived in to their late teens only eating this.
i feed purina pro plan myself and find nothing wrong with it and my dogs all appear healthy and happy, no skin issues or allergie issues.
i know quite a few people who feed the maximum nutrition foods from walmart and they swear by this food also. many dog show people feed it.
have fed iams for years also.
i really think it boils down to your individual dogs and how they tolerate and do on certain foods. there are obviously better foods and less quality foods. but i would switch up from the purina dog chow at least ot their purina one line.
Whenever the topic of dog food comes up there will be 100 different opinions and the person who is typing is feeding their dog the best in the world.
I think that as long as your dog likes it, is a good weight and the coat looks good then do not fix it.
I used to feed my other shepherd the best of the best (at the time) and it did not make any difference on how long she lived. She died at 10. where my friends give their dog crap, they keep them tied up outside, no attention and still kicking at 15????????
So, basically no matter what food you give it is the wrong one according to someone else
I fed maxximum nutrition for about 5 years before I swapped over to chicken soup for the dog lover's soul. In general, it's a decent food. Not the best quality but not the worst. My dogs both loved it.
exactly, if your dogs does well on it, skin, coat, health, weight etc. feed it, We chosse a little higher grade of the purina because we show and get wonderful results with skin and coat. We did rescue awile back, and fed a lower grade to the rescues, along with some can, and I've had St Bernards live to be 14 years old. Just watch the health and condition and go from there, everyone will have a different opinion.
Dogs have lived on Purina and done fine for years, BUT the first ingredients seem like it should be for a cow or horse. Corn, corn meal, soy meal. Dogs are meat eaters not grazers. I also don't like all the " by products" who knows what they are ( lips, feet, who knows) and beef fallow preservative, what in the heck is that? YUCK! I feed Sensible choice and like it and the poops are very small. I like that too! ( smile)
wow thanks for all the replies! i will check out the purina one instead of the purina chow. i was only trying it anyways cause i was given a free small box from costco but am not commited to it. i will checck into the purina one though and hopefully that is better for them..thanks.
The number one thing you should look at when choosing a dog food is the first ingredient. If it is anything other than meat, I would say investigate another food.
I say this because the first ingredient in any food is the majority of what is in the food. Do you really want your dog to eat corn? Trust me, it comes out the other end....so more filler, more poop. Who wants that?
Do you have to buy a name brand food to get good food? Not necessarily, but you do have to do some research.
Dogs will eat just about anything, especially if its flavored. Pedigree dog food is flavored with garlic and fish blood. Gross I know but the dogs eat it. :)
