Hi everyone. I posted some questions about basset hounds recently and I'm now very close to adopting a dog. I contacted a local basset rescue and was put in contact with a foster mom. We talked about a 5 year old basset who sounds just wonderful. However, I am STILL debating if this is the *best* dog for me. I am stuck between him and one of the many homeless adult pit bulls available in the area.
A basset or a pit bull?!? you may ask. Rightly so. Let me explain my situation and perhaps all you experienced dog owners can help me decide.
I live in an urban area and just moved into a condo. I am 24 years old and very active. I like to jog frequently and just spend a lot of time outside. I do not want a really small dog and I have been told that this will be okay as long as I do get my dog outside frequently. My girlfriend is about to leave the country for a year, so whatever dog I get will receive plenty of time and attention.
The basset would be cool because he is friendly with other dogs, and there are several other dogs in my building and neighborhood. He is supposedly just a bundle of cuddly joy and very respectful of furniture. However, I know bassets can howl quite loudly and shed/drool a lot.
The pit bull would be cool because he/she would be a better jogging companion and probably also be a cuddly bundle of joy. Of course, I'm worried about my place being big enough (it's about 700 square ft) so there is no destruction. I know about the dog aggression, but I would never my dog off its leash when outside of my place.
I should also mention I will be working 8-9 hours a day, but live very close to my work and will come home during lunch to walk the dog. Phew, long post, but lots of info to consider. I'm trying to get as much advice and info as possible before I make this big ol' decision.
