Hi, I'm an amature dog breeder. My chihuahua just had puppies. The puppies are thriving, almost doubled their size in a week, but they all have a scaly skin rash. You can't see it through their coat, but you can feel it. Dry flaky patches all over their backs and necks. It seems they were born with it, as I noticed it the first day. Now it's been about a week, and it's starting to flake off. I'm a little worried. But maybe it's a common condition? Can anybody tell me what the problem might be, and if I should worry? They're suckling and quiet and don't seem to be bothered by it, but.... Thanks, Barbara
Hello! It must be fun to be a dog breeder! I am so happy for you and your chihuahua. puppies can get cuts and scrapes just like us. sometimes this problem can occur without injury. the luster of the coat could be lost. the hair may feel like a brilo pad. it is hard to tell if this is a real problem. the skin is probobly just a little dryer than it should be and is just replacing itself. It may just be the way nature made them. they might also have dry seborrhea. don't worry about it unless it gets worse.
Take your mother dog and puppies to the vet and have a skin scraping done of the affected areas to check for demadetic mange or other skin issues that might be caused by worms and such. There're a lot of hereditary skin problems that dogs can pass to their offspring as well.
Certianly take the dog to the vet, puppies can have some skin problems due to them crawling all over each other and transferring bacteria. It is very hard to keep puppies bacteria and parasite free. Keep them well bathed and clean. They may need antibiotics.
