Lol..I have a cocker spaniel and she is a pig! We changed her diet cold turkey last time from Ol' Roy to Nutro a few weeks ago. I know that Nutro isn't the best and I want to do better for her. Because of her seizures she will stay on her current diet. after re-examining the ingrediets in Chicken Soup.. I found that there are WAY too many grains. I liked that it had more meat...but I can't risk the grains.
Hershey did well on Nutro Natural Choice for Large Breed Puppy. She's not all that crazy about the taste of the Nutro NC Ultra Puppy. I bought Wellness Super5Mix Chicken (purple bag) and Wellness Fish & Sweet Potato (blue bag). She loves the taste of Wellness foods. It looks like I will be transitioning her over to Wellness by mixing Wellness with her old food, Nutro NC Ultra for quite awhile. I can't believe how expensive Wellness is, but I guess it is worth it for Hershey's health. The cost per bag is just slightly higher than Nutro.
i feed my dogs chicken soup for the puppy lovers soul. and canned merricks. they also get natural balance lamb. i use the natural balance as treats. there are several good quality foods available. what works for some might not for others. i think you just have to find one that your dog does well with .
Maggie57 - I think you'll find that while you pay a little more per bag, you won't have to buy as often. The better quality foods will last longer. Hershey won't eat as much because of the better nutrition in the Wellness. Less in, less out, less clean up. I know a 33# bag of Eagle Pack lasts me almost three weeks with three puppies eating on it, and I free feed.

Hi Tessa...thanks for forwarding info..I tryed to view the sight but nothing is there they seem to be working on it so the info isnt there. Now Im like oh god what is this food BAD? It was given to me by my vet...she suggested that I try him on it so I figured it must have been good. Im sensing it isnt :-(............???????
Yes, I also heard that the better a food is for your dog nutritionally, the less they will need to eat to meet the daily requirements. Since, I mix Nutro with Wellness for Hershey chances are that it will be awhile before Hershey is just on Wellness foods. I want to get low on Nutro food in her stackable vittles vault before I add her Wellness foods in it. Food stays fresher in a vittles vault or other sealed canister. Vittles Vault though has the best seal for keeping dry dog or cat foods fresh. Leaving them in their original bag for too long can result in the food getting stale. Vittles vaults come in different sizes from 5-80 pounds food capacity. It really is worth getting one and is a one time expense. Best prices are at PetEdge.
I hope the link works. By any chance, ratpack, could you tell me the exact Science Diet formula you use? I can look up the ingredients and then tell you why it is bad, and then you will be able to pick a better food from your own knowledge:-)
Note: most vets have VERY little nutritional training. It is rare that I will trust a vet on what foods they suggest....
INGREDIENTS TO AVOID: Corn Gluten I have not been able to locate an official definition of this product, but since it is contained in only one formulation of one manufacturer (Excel Chunks/Mini Chunks), I assume it is the same as "Corn Gluten Meal".
An inexpensive by-product of human food processing which offers very little nutritional value and serves mainly to bind food together. It is not a harmful ingredient but should be avoided simply for its poor nutritional value and quality.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Corn Gluten Meal AAFCO: The dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm.
An inexpensive by-product of human food processing which contains some protein but serves mainly to bind food together. It is not a harmful ingredient but should not rank high in the ingredient list of a quality product.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chicken Byproduct Meal AAFCO: Consists of the dry, ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines -- exclusive of feathers except in such amounts as might occur unavoidably in good processing practices.
Chicken byproducts are much less expensive and less digestible than the chicken muscle meat. The ingredients of each batch can vary drastically in ingredients (heads, feet, bones etc.) as well as quality, thus the nutritional value is also not consistent. Don't forget that byproducts consist of any parts of the animal OTHER than meat. If there is any use for any part of the animal that brings more profit than selling it as "byproduct", rest assured it will appear in such a product rather than in the "byproduct" dumpster.
All of the above are INGREDIENTS TO AVOID that are in your pet's food.
Tessa..thankyou for the research.....now Im like.....ugh!! I think I will be looking into something better then.. any suggestions on a really good food.........anyone.....I appreciate it. Last night my son caught me reading the dogs food label after i was reading thru this post...and he is like Maaaa what are you doing ...reading up on the dogs food now.....hehe i think he thinks im obsessed...lmao
You are only obsessed when you walk through the store reading lables so that you can give people recomendations who won't go further then petsmart. *cough* or when you teach your once indiffrent boyfriend the positive nature of quality and he jumps right in these days.
Anyway, beyond that, one thing one must look at when it comes to dog food is the oils used. Many foods will give a dog a spectacular looking coat, but its simply a matter of oil. Most dog foods used processed grease, which gives the coat an amazing luster, but does nothing for the dogs itself.
Wellness is a good food, but one I personally do not feed any longer becuase it was not the best for my dogs. To much fiber for their sighthoundish systems.
But back to oil, if you want a super shiny coat from oil, add a bit of olive oil to your dogs diet. Not only will it give the coat luster, it will help with shedding, moisturize the skin and help keep stools flowing smoothly. Its also good for us and them, and its not fattening in small quantities. It has been my only and best suppliment for about five years now.
"I was like everyone else who isn't born knowing that all the dog food I can pick up cheap in the grocery stores are garbage. "
I just recently in the past few months started learning about dog nutrition. We used to feed Ol' Roy purina...ugh! I can't believe Purina can LIE that much on their commercials. I was in no way "born knowing"....I far from a perfect dog owner, but I am learning.
"And for someone feeding Nutro, that is pretty much high end crap itself... you are an awfully brave young lady and you have about _ <---that much room to talk. "
To be totally honest, I am very offended. I feed Nutro because I HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE! I am in an area where I would have to drive two hours out of my way to get the better foods. I am also not rich. I am only 15 and doing the best I can do for my dog(despite my mother's lack of knowledge and stubborness). That means I have no drivers license....I have to compromise with my parents to even buy the Nutro! I had to beg for three months to have them let me switch dog foods. My dog also has seizures,..I am following DoctorJ's protocal by reducing ANY grain intake she may get. The reason I am feeding nutro is because it only has ONE grain source which is a good one=rice. It isn't corn...or by products. Nutro isn't as bad as you make it out to be. I could be, and had been, feeding a much worser food.
"Tessa, I do not care if you dog is a show dog. That is fabulous for your dog. Really. That however, does not give you the right to act like a snob to people on this forum. "
My parents got my dog from a BYB. She is no show dog. She has seizures and many many faults. She also has behavioral issues...well, lack of confidence in obedience ...but that is my fault and I am using positive reinforcement to correct it.
I was not trying to seemlike a snob. If I did, I am sorry. I was simply, giving someone links to help further educate themselves about dog nutritioin. I am in no way an expert on dog food, but I have gained some knowledge. If you feel that is snobby, so be it.
"And as for the greenies, they are a TREAT. I give my dog apple cinnamon cheerios as a TREAT as well, there is no meat in those either..... "
I am sorry. I should not have been so loud and blunt about my opinion. I can admit when I am wrong,..and that time I was wrong to express my opinion in such a manner. I still would never feed greenies, though, because of all the grains and Cocoa's seizures.

tessa- say what you want, i have been through this myself, which is why i check it anr/or comment about once a month. people will always have someting to say, always. i think you gave many resources and i thank you for that. i have to give Coach Eukanuba Low Res, which is prescription from his vet. he has to have that because he had an increase in bacteria in his small intestines since i got him. honsetly, i could give a damn what anyone thinks about what i feed my dog....but thanks for all of the links, i can promise you i will be reading up on the links myself. Coach is 6 months now, and i would like to add some food to his low res which would add more protein to his diet. i clearly dont have a clue on food, for dogs or humans, hell, i eat hot dogs and french fries all of the time...and before someone says it, i am not overweight, i am very healthy and get my cholesterol checked all of the time......
