I've never used a a harness on any of my dogs, but recently, I've seen seen so many dogs wearing them, although it's mostly small dogs.
What is the advantage of using a harness? Does it make it easier to walk the dog? It would seem to me that there is less control and the dog is more likely to pull and tug, but again, I honestly don't know since I've never used one.
I'm not planning on changing to one, as I have no problems walking my pup, Just curious. Thanks in advance.
I like using harnesses on my because i take them out in public a lot and it makes people feel safer when you have hold of a harness rather than a leash. I also have a hearing dog and she has to have on a harness to be let in to certain places.
I use harnesses on my girls. Yes, they pull, but I'd rather have to control them with the harness then chance one of them damaging their throat. I know on small dogs, many people use the harness as a quick pick me up in case of danger to the little one. Can't (well shouldn't) do that with a collar.
All 3 of my dogs wear a harness...60lbs, 25lbs and 10lbs...
However, I've always trained the dogs to walk on a leash without a harness first, but I prefer the harness over a collar because I feel as if it's more comfortable for the dogs and because I feel like I have more control, if, let's say a cat were to run by us while on our walk.
A properly trained dog wont' pull on a collar, so there's little danger to the throat. A harness is no control at all, and if you have big dogs like I do, there is no correction. Bowen would drag me all over creation if I had me on a harness, and he only weighs 50 lbs
Thanks Minnevar. I was thinking the same thing. I've never used one, and didn't have any intention of using one. I Angie has never pulled me when I walk with her. It was more a curiosity kind of question for me, especially since I've seen so many dogs, especially small ones, wearing them recently. Maybe I'm just more aware of it since I've had the new puppy.
I am mostly anti harness, because most dogs that use them are pullers. But the good thing for me is, mine get tangled less, especially in the woods, walking. And I like the fact that it has less of a chance of pulling off if they go over the edge of a wall or small cliff (I know where the heck are you takeing them?>) I put back pack on them and take them hikeing. besides they say bully breeds should wear them.
my 50lbs mutt and my baby chi wear harnesses. My baby chi walks really good-no pulling. My mutt however is a puller, but I am working with him to correct that. He used to choke himself all the time with a collar and I just felt so bad.
