My dog Bella is a mixture between a Lasa Apso and a Poodle. She will be two in September. My dog is infatuated with my mother. She responds in a heartbeat to her commands and always listens intently. Bella is usually very timid and shy and never barks, only when commanded. We’re not sure how, however there is a scratch on her neck we think from another dog scratching her. (Short story, my brother came over with his pittbull puppy and obviously my brother’s dog wanted to play more rough then Bella so we think the other dog may have scratched her there). This scratch started to protrude outward and was swollen. We went to the vet and he gave her something to ease the pain. Now lately, she’s always twitching her neck, and shaking abundantly (you know when dogs ear twitches a bit and then they shake to ruffle their fur?). Bella now won’t even look into my mother’s eyes anymore. She won’t respond with ANYTHING. Won’t lay her head down on the pillow or bed. When she does lay down, she rubs her face into a blanket and hides her face away from our hands. Then a few seconds later, she jolts in her sleep and runs off the couch or bed. She doesn’t lay her head down so she has trouble sleeping with her cranium upward. She usually would stare at our feet and follow and wag her tail. Now she just stands still, looking straight away and doesn’t even wag her tail when we talk baby talk. Bella won’t even play with her favored toy. It has been 48 hours since the incident and we’re unable to go to the vet for, it is Sunday. Last night, Bella began shaking for no reason whenever she would breath out her whole body would shake. So we left her in a room with the door closed, away from everyone. My dog is a scardy cat so we were expecting tremendous whining or crying. None was heard, Bella stayed in the room all night without a sound…..that’s NOT Bella. She just looks out of it, doesn’t respond at all and I would really like to figure out her problem. We just got her last year and we’re worried of her future… If anyone knows what is going on with our dog, please inform me. My name is Monica by the way. Sorry for taking up your time like this and making you read such a long story however we would greatly appreciate some help with Bella. Please, and Thank-you So much.

Well when we found the protruding swollen scratch on her neck he shaved her neck and cleaned it up. So far she’s been injected with, Penicillin and Benadryl (to help her sleep). I think then he gave her antibiotics and a painkiller. It’s this pill that we put in her food and she eats it though…. Bella hardly eats because she has such a small frame. We spray this thing on her neck also to keep it from getting infected. The vet said that she wasn’t infected at the time but he disinfected it anyway and gave us a spray bottle for it. Don’t know what it’s called at the moment.
I'm only 14; I wouldn't know what 'kind' of painkiller he gave her, sorry. We came to a conclusion that maybe the cause of her twitching and jolting out randomly, (she twitches then ruffles her fur about/ sometimes she just runs off for no reason and stands just staring at you with no emotion) is the hair in her ears. We groom her daily and keep her fur all clean and we go to the groomer's every once and a while to let them pull the hair out of her ears. We didn't want to because.... well it seemed like it hurt the dog and we didn't want Bella to disregard us because of pulling hair O.o The vet didn't say anything but we haven’t gone to the groomer's yet so maybe the twitching and jolting is because of the hair in her ears. Do you think that 'hair in the ears' would lead to strange actions in a poodle/lassa apso? Or maybe something else? Excuse me for the incorrect spelling of Lassa Apso, I don’t know the right spelling for it.
Okay, will do! :) By the way Thank-you everyone for taking the time to read and then reply. I may not show it but we all are very appreciative of any info given. Thank-you very much.
Unfortunately we can't take her to the vet today. My whole family left to Mississauga and I didn't feel up to going so I'm just here with her to look after her. Do you think an ear infection would cause a dog to shake whenever she takes a breath? I worry for her because she just stands and walks around aimlessly giving no eye contact and won't lay down, won’t respond, however she is wagging her tail a bit more, portraying happiness I hope. She sits and tries sleeping sitting up. Then she'll stumble, stand up, and try sleeping again. My Mother scared me by saying the possibility of a tumor in her head? However, we don't know much a about dogs, she is our first one. The only info we mostly have is of shows I watch on Animal Planet. And as she stands and takes in a breath, her whole body begins to shake and I'm sure that isn't because she is cold...Like some have said here, it’s probably a side effect of the medicine. We stopped giving her the pill now, requested by the vet.
Once again, thank-you everyone for responding and helping out! ^.^
can you look on the bottle of pills he gave you for her and tell me what they say ? drinking and urinating more are usually side effects of steroids like prednisone or dexamethasone. which can also be used dually as pain meds if the cause is inflammation, like in disc injuries. i have seen some pets react the way you descirbe from side effects of the drug predinisone.
also steroids lower the bodies ability to heal in certain cases which may be why all of a sudden she is showing signs of infection, pus.
I'm so sorry your Bella is having problems, Devil_kitty, and I can't add much, just the fact that my boy Magnum had some of this same behavior when he was on a separation anxiety medication...it turned out that he became allergic to it. Once he was off it for a few days, he returned to normal.
I hope Bella is better soon, and I'd like to add that it's wonderful to see a 14-year-old who has such great command of the English language and is able to relay his/her thoughts so succinctly! Best wishes!
Thank-you very much for that, that made me smile!!!! ^.^ Thank-you!! And we stopped giving her the pill, however I'll still read it to you:
"2 Prednisone 5 mg tablets. Give 1/2 a tablet for 4 days"
We gave her half a pill once and the vet had then asked us to stop because she isn't really showing much signs of inflammation.... I’m presuming that the pill WAS the painkiller I think...not sure. We are surely going to bring our little baby to the vet tomorrow. I cry every night because I am worried but it's just my negativity. I made it last night without crying much by leaving myself the notion that everything will be okay. It may be a little incompetent of me but do you think it might lead to death? I have said already this is our first dog and we're all, unfortunately, acting very negative towards the current activity Bella has shown.
Well…just an update. Vet said at her age she shouldn’t be even close to having a tumor though it may be a possibility. The vet said he’s not entirely sure if it IS an ear infection so he gave us I guess ear drops. Also since Bella hasn’t eaten or drank since Friday (when the problems all began) we have to force feed her now. They even gave her this type of food for her to eat, I think it was like a high ranked food or something (creme de la creme sort of thing) and she still wouldn’t eat it either. She still shakes at night. We stopped giving her the pills. We pulled her hair out of her ears today however the vet said that there are still an abundant of hairs left within her ears. Bella still walks off alone and sits alone. That’s not normal because Bella is a very timid animal and despises being alone with no human contact. No sign of a disease yet. We checked for fever luckily she doesn’t have one. Still no clue on what this behavior is leading to...
Bella also keeps rubbing her face. She’s walking off and want to be alone. She won’t rest her head and keeps jolting randomly as if she was spooked by something. She ate today…a bit however she drank a lot so that’s great! We just can’t figure out what’s going on with the poor baby.
She’s acting a bit better now. Still not herself though...Mom said she want to put her down right away if she is in pain and I’m begging her to disregard that thought and give Bella a few more weeks. I’m sure she’s not in pain it’s just something she’s going through...I hope.
