Assumming you want a non barker, non shedder, you probably want a low manitenance dog and I don't think basenji's fall into that category, being wild in africa and still having wild tendencies. I believe I've heard they can be quite a challenge.
There are lots of non shedders, but all dogs bark or are vocal in some way.
Yea japanese chins only bark when you are playing with them. They go wou wou wou. It is really cute! They also whine (sp?) when playing and you are winning then they do the wou wou wou. I should record it and see if I can put it on here it is so funny! I love the way different dogs have different barks. Now that is my male. My female is pretty quiet. I did bath them yesterday and boy are they shedding so they shed like a normal dog.

The only breed that is considered non-barking is a Basenji, however they are not silent because of this, they have an annoying "yodel" (sp?) , and of course are not a non-shedding breed, non of them are,I dont think they are even on the low dander list
