I have just recently lost a dog that I had for 14 years, I got her when I was two. It was a hard loss for me and my family, she was the only dog I ever had. I am currently looking for a puppy, and I have no idea what to get. My previous dog was part lab part terrier. I dont have much money to spend on a dog who needs to be groomed and needs special high class dog food. I want a dog who is good with kids because I have a 6yr old sister. I would prefer a girl dog. I dont want a huge dog ie: great dane, st bernard, I also dont want a dog that looks good with bows in their ears or in one of those carry bags. I want a medium size dog. A dog that is playful but can also cuddle with me. Again I dont have much money. Any help that you could give me on what kind of dog I should get would be very helpful. Thank you.
I'm very sorry for your loss. I know the pain of losing a beloved pet and even thugh a new dog wn't take the place of the one you recently lost, she or he, will help heal the hole in your heart.
I think you should get another lab mix, and go to your local Shelter or Human Society. I had a lab mix, and a purebred lab, and both wre wonderful and very affectionate dogs that were good with kids. They always have lots of dogs for adoption at Petsmart and Petco, too. Petco where I live usually always has puppies, too.
Goood luck in finding a friend, and keep us posted.
Visit your local piund or shelter, they will usually allow you to spend time with the dog before deciding. Also, depending on your area, the ASPCA is a good rescue option. They also do temperament testing on each dog and will be able to tell you if it is good with children, other dogs, has food aggression, or any other problems.
thank you for all of your help, I live in Oregon, medford to be exact, I love the labs but my last dog had more lab in her, and every time I see a lab or part lab, I see her eyes, and her face, it just breaks me apart. I love the lab, but I think it would be hard for me.
How about a Golden Retriever or GR mix? Most shelters have this type available a lot. Check Petfinder for shelters and rescues near you. Sorry for your loss, That's the price we pay for loving a dog, they leave us much too soon.
Thank you all so much for your help. I actually just found a puppy that I will be picking up tomorrow. I know that sounds odd knowing that just 3 hrs ago I had no idea what to get. I am going to be purchasing and akc chocolate lab puppy, 8wks old tomorrow-sunday. it is a little girl. She is $350. I still dont know what to name her so if anyone has any suggestions that would help me out a lot too. Thank you again, and I look forward to hearing some suggestions.
Well since she is a choc lab and she is a her and a she how about Hershe (?) like the candy but without the y. Just a little play on words. lol I bet she will be adorable and lots of fun. I lost a great dog last year and it took my family a few months until we got another dog, I had a golden retriever/collie mix and he was with us for 13 1/2 years so I am really feeling your pain. This little darling won't replace your other dog but she will be great for you and your healing heart, I know.
I have a chocolate lab too, he's almost 9 months old now, great dog, good choice! For girl names, I'd go with something like Mocha (mo-ka), Cocoa, Molly..and that's all I can think of for now. Good luck with everything!!
