Sorry, everybody. I know, I have a free one coming in the mail, too. And I had about a dozen little ones I bought awhile ago. I havn't had any problems with them either, but I guess there's always a first time.

I have been reading this post from the get-go, and although I'm generally just a lurker, I felt I had to speak up and give my opinion, even though I'm sure I'm gonna get flamed:

There's always a first time for EVERYTHING.

Does anyone responding to this post think that MOST dogs have a problem with Greenies? Come on!! That can't be right!

I, for one, am getting the free greenie, and I intend on giving it to my baby, who has had absolutely NO problem with them. No choking, no vomiting, no surgeries (imagine that!), normal behavior and stools.

This past weekend, my aunt told me of a dog she personally knew whose owners had taken her to the VET to get her nails clipped. The vet nipped the quick on one nail. The dog ended up getting an infection and, after being seen almost daily by the vet and ending up in an animal hospital, died from the infection due to that cut. If I were to follow the "greenies" train of logic, I'd never get my dog's nails clipped again, and I'd let everybody know that nail clipping causes death in dogs, and that vets are murderers!

I've heard of dogs choking on any number of things, toys, chewies, food. It happens! Also, I'm not sure I believe that a hunk of Greenie, being swallowed by ANY dog, just sits there in the digestive system waiting to cause problems.

We don't live in a glass bubble, and, if we did, how boring would that be! I've had a dog die because of gastric torsion (think bloat)...the only sure way of fighting this killer is to feed the dog intravenously. Not gonna happen.

Accidents happen, that's all there is to it. Living a life without risk is impossible.

Supervise your dogs with any treat. Take the greenie stub away if it makes you nervous. But don't make a blanket statement that Greenies are unsafe for ALL dogs, it's just not true!

It isn't that the dogs are choking. Its that the greenies are not highly dogestible like they claim. They do not break up in the stomach or on the way down. In fact they soemetimes swell up causing the obstruction. Its up to you to feed them or not but just know it isn't based on the fact of the dog being a gulper or size.

Yes, Joce, and, with all due respect, if you'd read my whole response, you'd have seen that:

In some dogs, sure, I can believe that, it's just the law of probability, but for the vast majority, no, I haven't seen anything to back that up. I'm not sure we should lambaste or, God forbid, remove a source of pleasure for the overwhelming majority of dogs, in the interest of a few, who may or may not have had digestive problems even BEFORE they were introduced to Greenies.

Of COURSE it's up to me to feed them or not, and I will continue to do so. The fact(?) that they "sometimes swell up causing the obstruction" does not concern me. I cannot and will not let it. If I adhered to the supposed solution of every single problem I've ever heard a dog had, I wouldn't have one, because I'd live each and every day in fear of their imminent death, due to choking, getting off leash, escaping the yard, being left alone, being crated/uncrated, being neutered/spayed/undergoing ANY type of surgery, clipping their nails, eating Greenies/rawhides/sticks/socks/underwear/toys, etc., etc., etc.

My point is, as it was in my previous post, one cannot live a life free from risk. To me, Greenies are an acceptable risk.

I have feed greenies with no problems. Each to his/her own but now I am not going to take the chance that they don't break down well in the system and might cause a blockage. I don't feed Science diet, but they have a tarter control bites in small and regular size you can order form your vet. They are called TD. My dogs LOVE them. All of these products seem like they are gone so fast that I wonder if they do any good at all. The rawhides where the only thing that lasted for at least 10 minutes but my Yorkies threw them up and had LOTS blood in the vomit and 3 where really sick! That was 2 years ago, boy was I scared. I hear too that there is chemicals in the ones not made in the USA. I guess brushing is best but that is a big mess and hard to do on the small dogs with tiny mouths.

Well, it sure looks like this topic has had a good turnout. There will always be differences of opinions to most subject matters. My opinion is to sort through the given facts and decide for yourself whether giving this good tasting, dental treat (Greenies) is safe and best for your dog(s). I just know that I won't give another Greenie to my puppy ever again.

As far as bad teeth everyone I have asked has said that these treats do nothing for the teeth. Its like saying gum helps our teeth,which it doesn't! A high quality food is what shuold keep your dogs teeth in good shape.

But chewing gum DOES help our teeth--as long as it's chewed for more than 20 minutes at a time. I've had three dentists tell me this same thing. Chewing gum for at least 20 minutes at a time causes an increase in saliva which "washes" the teeth, thereby washing away stuff that would turn into plaque otherwise.

Does/Should it replace brushing and flossing? No. But studies show that chewing it for extended periods of time does provide a notable benefit, which is that of washing away unwanted detritus/bacteria that can cause cavities.

A good friend of mine whose father is a dentist, even gives out packs of gum at Halloween.

I've been a notorious gum chewer just about since I've had teeth to chew it with, and I've got just two fillings in my teeth (I'm 42). I've always brushed regularly, but I rarely floss. My son is the same way, he's 13 and has NO fillings.

Do greenies help our dogs' oral health? It would seem so since they are an accepted product of the Veterinarian's Oral Health Council:

You really like to aregue:) Just like no mom is going to give their kids a pack of gum instead of brushing their teeth people should take care of their dogs mouth by brushing or choosing a higher quality food. I have dentisits too nad they've both told me its bull,not that I really care anyway,cuz I hate gum. Who chews longer than a minute anyway:)

If you want to feed your pet greenies that is your choice. But that doesn't mean we should not tell people akll the things we have heard about them. My vet and the emregency vet here don't kike them. They agree with the food being the best for the teeth and one made a joke about chews like that bringing him in more money. Just ignore it if you have made your decision.

No, I really don't like to argue. :)

I just think people should back up their argumentative statements with fact, rather than conjecture and hearsay. Good gosh, if I believed everything everybody told me, I'd be a basketcase. If something sounds funny/unbelievable to me, I research it. I've come to discount many hoaxes and urban legends this way.

I don't, for example, believe that chihuahuas are descended from rats, as I've heard many people purport as truth due to a recent internet e-mail hoax.

Yeha I backed it up with what i told you. Not only do I trust my dentist I have great teeth. I also trust my vet that he has had dogs come in with greenie related problems and that I shouldn't feed them. Thats like arguing science diet is a good food because it is reccomended by vets.

You obviously don't know what hearsay is.

If you want to make decisions and live your life based on other people's "alleged" experiences and what they "heard," you go right ahead. But don't force it down my throat, which is what you are doing, purporting to know the "truth." For myself, I need facts. I don't go by what I hear other people say unless I can see independent facts, which, in this case, are non-existent and complete hearsay.

Like I said previously, I believe that SOME dogs have problems with greenies. I do not believe, however, that MOST dogs have problems with greenies. Just as SOME dogs have problems with small kibble...MOST dogs don't.

To those who feel that Greenies are very safe for dogs, please click on the Free Greenie message post on TP and read sa1991's post. That post alone might make you reconsider on giving Greenies to your dog.

As for me, I rarely bought any greenies for my dogs. Man those things are expensive!!

Now that I know there might be even just a slight probability that my dogs could get sick by them, I will never buy them.

I like to buy my dogs bones from the meat market and I cook them for them and put some seasoning to them.
They have a feast with them and is so much cheaper!!

I just have to be careful not to leave the bones laying around when I leave because they will fight over them.

Cooking bones!! Ahh! Please, don't do that. Cooked bones are very easily splintered and could kill your dog or cause them to have very bad problems. Raw bones work just fine!

Cooking the bones is what causes them to splinter. I remember the first time I read about raw diets I thought they were all psycho for feeding bones!

reading this topic, i'm so relieved that everytime i tried to give greenie to my dog, he would either just sniff it a couple of times and ignore it or he would just carry it over to somewhere else to hide it in the closet or under a couch or wherever and were never interested in looking at it again. (i guess there are three of them hiding somewhere in my apartment.) i can't believe i was even disappointed that he wouldn't take it but now i'm very happy that he did and thank you for sharing this inforamtion. meanwhile, my dog loves real bone. i'm a bit worried, however, about bacteria that may come with it. i heard that soaking it in apple cyder vinegar kills a lot of them. does anyone know how long i should be soaking? and is there any other way to kill bacteria? will running a boiling water over it for a few second be enough to make it splinter?
