I noticed a few days ago my dog was in heat, I had her in a cage with a 4 month old (male) pup, So i got another cage and put the puppy in that one, She is Bleeding and i have noticed her nipples gotten bigger also, I have read on the internet that they wont except a male till after they stop bleeding. So do you think she is pregnant or did i get the pup out in time? I realy dont think the pup is old enough to be able to produce puppies, Is he? And i havent seen any strays around either. So i am hoping she is'nt in to the time of the heat to breed. Thanks
i say...never under estimate a male...no matter what age...my shamus was 5 months old...2 weeks previous his testicals were undesended...well...the min pin i had was in heat...and the min pin male was unwilling to mate...so we kept the 2 breeds apart...well..the min pins got out of the pen...dont reallyno how...and when i looked...sure enough she was tied...with my mini schnauzer...well..i tried to make it stop,,,yeah right...so i called the vet...on call...as it was after hours...and he told me of mismate shots...and said we should see if the young male had sperm...and to do a sperm count...well...of corse he had swimmers...and we did the miss mate shot...and it isnt a good thing for uterin infections...so we gave antibiotics just to be on the safe side...all worked out well...and we learned our lesson...we no longer have min pins...but we no longer underestimate any male...where there is a will...theres a way...so,,,my recomendation to you is,...
unless your going to breed labs...id fix her like now...she is old enough...if not...it can take 6 to 7 weeks to really know if they are pregnant by just looking at them...my shepherd never seems pregnant till the 7th week..just recently she had 10...and im not sure how she hid them all...but...you can get ultrasounds...and after 40 days...xrays..but...you would really have to ask yourself if you really want to go through all of that...the heat cycle lasts over 20 days...the mess the hassle...please take time out and assess what you really want to do with her...She certainly is too young to have puppies if this is her frst heat...I wish you luck...and please give things some thought...take care
First of all, if you're going to keep an intact female dog you need to check her at least every other day to see if she is in heat (her vulva will swell and she will bleed - though sometimes you have to open the vulva gently and look inside to see the blood). You won't be able to keep her outside when she is in heat as she'll attract every male dog within a 5 mile radius. You also should really keep her indoors through the whole pregnancy and while she is with the litter. I personally am not a fan of "outside dogs". Especially if you plan to breed they should be indoors.
You really need to consider other things than whether you can sell the puppies. Do YOU want to be a breeder? Can you afford to take a week off of work to insure that you are there when she delivers the pups and then to supervise her first couple of days with them? Can you afford $1000 for a c-section if one is needed? What if she gets pyometra? If you loose your female dog (which happens more often then most people think) can you take the time off of work to bottle feed up to 10 puppies AROUND THE CLOCK for 3-4 weeks? (I mean they have to be bottle fed for 30 minutes each every 2-3 hours - it'll take more than one person and you have to do it at night as well)
Can you handle potential buyers coming back on you because their puppy is sick and they want you to take responsibility or it? Are you going to offer a health gaurantee? Can you handle potential buyers wanting to stop by and see the puppies at all hours of the day and calling with multiple questions?
It's not always about whether your cousin wants a puppy from your dog. It's more about whether YOU have the time to properly care for your dog.
And then comes the issues involved with caring for your dog. What do you know about her background (health and temperament wise)? Are you prepared to have her hips OFA'd? Do you know what vet care you'll have to provide to her while she is pregnant and what you'll have to provide to the puppies? What about feeding? How do you wean a litter of puppies? How are you going to find a stud dog and what will the fee be?
Breeding is NOT fun. You don't make money if you do it properly, and you usually end up with a lot of sleepless nights and a lot of tears. There is an equal share of joy - but it's just that - equal. It's hard work as much as it is joyful to cuddle cute puppies. Don't get into breeding unless YOU want to be a breeder.
Not spaying your female dog also increases her risk of cancer AND it puts her at risk for things like pyometra.
I bet you guys heard that question already a million times but is it normal that the tits swell during heat? My dog was supposed to get spayed but got into heat a couple of days before the appointment. We kept her away from male dogs and I am all worried because her tits are a bigger than usuall. She is only a baby and I don't want my baby to have babies.
Am I doing something wrong? my female shih-tzu came into heat 10 days ago. My male dog has lost interest. He was humping her all this time. she would not let em. I got them for breeding. I didnt know it was this hard. What should I do?
