Tails should be docked within the first 7 days after they are born. Ears should be cropped at about 8 weeks. If you don't get the tail done at birth, it is much more difficult on the puppy because it's bones and cartilage are fusing, and the nervous system is formed enough that it is a lot more painful. With ears, if you haven't had it done by the time the dog is 4 months old, it's too late. The cartilage in the ears is already set and the ears won't stand up regardless of whether you get them cut. If you take your dog to have the ears cropped, make sure you take it to a veterinarian who is experienced in doing this, otherwise they can really butcher the dogs ears.
