If you go with a private trainer, please NEVER EVER leave your dog with that person EVER! You have to most importantly learn how to train your dog! Leaving a dog with a trainer you learn nothing & are asking to get your dog stolen or beat into being trained. It happens all of the time! ANY of the group classes are great because it also socializes your dog as well as you both learn. We have a Petsmart in Houston however that has a trainer working for them that has stolen dogs previously by private training where he kept the dog. This is when he worked elsewhere. Corp Petsmart has been contacted & they do not care because it hasn't happened to them..........yet. That store has good "Numbers" so they don't care.....
Petsmart is not the only place that does group training. Petco does also. Go to www.google.com & search for Group classes in your area.
Have fun, be smart & enjoy!

I was quite amused by the obedience classes in petsmart.
They are designed to fale.
You do not keep saying stay, sit, come. The command is given once and only once then followed up by a correction such as no. At petsmart there were a half a dozen people in a small circle with their dogs saying sit, sit, sit, sit.
All you are doing is teaching the dog he does not have to obey you on the first command and if you are really really serious you will give him the command until he decides to obey it.
I couldn't agree with you more Rhondakbt. I couldn't handle the thouht of leaving my pup somwehere selse for two weeks in the first place. In the second place place, you dn't know what happens when you aren't there.
As for Petsmart and Petco, I do think that distractions can be a good thing however. After all, your dog is going to have tons of distractions in the "real" world. I just wasn't impressed when I watched one of the training classes at the Petsmart near me, but his doesn't mean all the trainers or classes are not good.
Everyone should know that no matter what kind of training you end up choosing, it's not really the dog that is being trained, but the owner who is bening taught how to train the dog and how to handle problems. With any training lesson, it's also extrememly important to practice every single day without fail.
